New Old Game

I am playing original Crysis again. This time technology has finally caught up to the original inefficient Crytec 1 game engine.

I have all the game settings turned up all the way with anti-aliasing set at 2x on three 1920 x 1200 monitors getting frame rates of around 50 FPS.

It is almost like a completely new game this time with all the details and shading done in its full splendor. Even though it is only in DX9, the colors, details, textures and shading are very different this time. The enemies are easier to spot and to take out which almost seems unfair at times. It really is a beautiful game the second time around which makes wandering around the map and looking at the details a lot of fun, that's after you have rid the enemy from a particular area and can then relax and enjoy the scenery.

I really missed a lot cool stuff when I raced through the game the first time. Crytec really put a lot of effort into this game, more than I realized the first time around.

From an immersive standpoint, it feels more like I am there. The emotions you get in intense situations are a little more. If you are a Trekkie, it's one step closer to the holodeck.

I'm looking forward to revisiting some other older games now.

With 3DMark11, its amazing how close we are getting to movie quality maps. It will not be long before we no longer bother with movie sets and all the actors will be standing in front of a green screen....or even to start partially eliminating actors, which I almost hate to say but understand the cost efficiencies.

Isn't it fun going back to old games with new equipment? I've always been about 6-12 months behind when buying upgrades, and when I do install the upgrades it makes it so much more fun.

That is just insane David, Crysis at those FPS at that resolution must be amazing. I take it you are liking the 6990's then.

Yep, going back to a game that's only a few years old and running it on newer hardware can certainly improve the visual quality if you couldn't crank everything to the max before.
