Counterstrike (All you need is Half-Life, CS is free, just in case you're not playing it already)
and Command and Conquer Red Alert 2 |

I'll second on counter strike. It's pretty much the only thing I've been playing for a year now, and I'm still not sick of it. Definetly getting my money out of that purchase.
try the review section at: www.cgonline.com If you stick to their 4.5 or 5 star-rated games, you should be OK. I don't always listen to their ratings, but when I don't, I always wind up wishing I had. They've never steered me wrong. |

I like to read PC GAMER. Since I do I never play a bad game.
Grab a copy of Deus Ex. You won't be disappointed.

FPS..
Still UT, but Quake 3 gets points for being a very well balanced 1v1 game. No others that I can think of cut it for me right now. RTS.. Sacrifice is one of my personal favorites |

Hi.
If you truly enjoy playing games by yourself the FPS above are great. But online gaming is a must. Counter Strike and CTF and are awesome games you can play online for 30$. At the moment I am only playing Dark Age of Camelot. Here is a link to the official homepage of the game, worth the look. http://www.darkageofcamelot.com/ If you are not aware, wish I doubt, this is a MMORPG. Its worth the look. Drawbacks: The game is about 35$ plus a monthly fee of 10$, you do get your first month free. Within that month you will know wether you want to stick with it or not, hell, with in the hour!!!

RPG:
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn + expansion Throne of Bhaal Great game especially if you get some passable AI scripts for your characters to handle combat and healing. Turn Based Strategy: Sid Meier's Civlization III A true step up from the previous Civ games. The only negative I have found in the week that I have been playing it (constantly) is the production queue. I can't figure out how to remove things from it, only replace things already in it. Baldur's Gate I and II along with their respective expansions, both official and otherwise. Icewind dale + expansions is also a great game. These games are AD&D based. IMHO rpgs are the best games out there, and said rpgs are the best rpgs out there.

I prefer RPGs over FPS, for RPGs provide a more complete gaming experiece. With the exception of Half-Life, most of the FPS are just mindless shooters, where story plays a minor part.
To me a game must shine in three departments to be qualified as a GREAT game or a MUST HAVE: story line, graphics and gameplay. Take, for example, Revenant. I bought it because the story seemed promising, but halfway through the game, the story was almost forgotten and the only thing you did was hack and slash. And it was an RPG! To me it was just a game that belonged more to consoles than to PCs, because of the poor statistics management and lot of combat combos. RPG, my aunt Nelly! It was an action game! It was a game that could have been a very great title but was dragged down due to poor storyline and repetitive gameplay. If you like hacking and slashing in RPGs go get Diablo II instead. Now let's speak of Baldur's Gate. Its graphics are not the best of the best, but the emphasis on story is great indeed. Though I only played it once, it stuck me to my monitor for endless hours ove four months or so. Now that's what I call immersion! A game that I haven't played but some people, and PC GAMER has recomended is Arcanum. It was designed for the guys that brought us Fallout and Fallout 2 (two of the best RPGs BTW). Counter-Strike, Quake 3, Soldier of Fortune, BGII...
Do not buy: Arcanum---very weird, Pool of Radiance---great game for a while, then you get lost running around the map looking for some stupid key you missed the first time, plus it is very buggy and crashes a lot, Crimson Skies---got great reviews, totally sucks! Totally addivtive games that everyone should have---AirXonix--a 3D version of the old microsoft game Jezzball, Eggsucker---just like Snood or the old SNES/Genesis game Bust a Move, both have demos available for download. |

Mech Warrior 3 and Diablo II were my favorites. I'm not really much of a gamer. I really liked European Air War too, still play it from time to time.

Well, since nobody else is gonna mention them, I will---the Age of Empires games. They are great!
Delta Force 3 was fun, but a little too easy, and not very long. It might be fun multiplayer though, but I can't imagine it being anywhere near as fun as Counterstrike! |

Best Buy has all 4 Comand and Conquer games in a box set for $50. I haven't played them but I want to if it is worth it.
