After formatting my GeForce hates me

Ok, here goes my graphic woes.

Was operating my system with my Western Digital 40 Gig, 7200 rpm HD as master and a Maxtor 7.2 Gig, 5400 rpm as slave. Had bright idea one day and cleansweeped the supposedly orphaned files and could no longer access internet. So, I formatted my 7.2 Gig HD, made it master and the WD 40 the slave.
Now my GeForce has dismal image and framerate, sometimes even gives me motion sickness when playing TFC.
Even put in the brand new Detonators which were available the very day this happened. Oh yeah, and this may be the key- I lost the CD to install the drivers for the video card. Leadtek's site is being overwhelmed, they say, so at first I couldn't connect to their server to download their software and a few days later when I could, the damn thing won't install but gives me a box that has a red circle in it with a white X and this: 60)
then when I click on OK, the whole installation box disappears and that's the end of that.
Tried a few things, but nothing near the performance I got before the formatting.

Hi timpoet,

I just want to be quite clear about what you've done.

You've put 98SE on the 7.2GB and made it Master but what do you have on the 40GB now?

Did you format the primary partition on the 40GB that contained the OS?

Putting a 7200rpm and a 5400rpm on the same IDE channel will mean that both
HDs will run at the speed of the slower drive i.e. 5400rpm. A better method is to put the 7200rpm on IDE 1 and the 5400rpm on IDE 2. That means your both your 5400rpm and 7200rpm HDs will run at their full speeds.

However, to accomplish this you should use ATA 66/100 IDE cables. These have blue, gray and black connectors. You should jumper both drives to Cable Select and then the Blue connector goes to the Mobo, the gray to Slave, and the Black to HD.

Also, I think you should put 98SE on your fastest HD, which of course is the 7200rpm drive.

However, if you want to continue with your existing setup, then might want to completely uninstall the NVidia Det. drivers

and try a different version of Det Drivers. I'm a bit behind the times and still using 6.31 with my Geoforce 256, but these drivers are very stable and I have no inclination to change at the moment.


Re: Cleansweep.

I would use Cleansweep for installing and uninstalling programs and Fast and Safe Cleanup. A job it does very well. Much better than Windows Add/Remove programs. However, I would not use it for ANYTHING else. I've never touched Orphans or Duplicates in any of my OSs and they run perfectly well.

Yeah, Mike, I agree with you (now) about the limited function of CleanSweep.

I have one ATA 66/100 IDE cable for the 40 gig, I'll get one for the other.

I did get my performance back for my graphics last night, thank God. The Leadtek CD for the drivers came and I loaded them and then upgraded to the newest Detonators and voila! Sigh of relief.

I will tackle the 40 gig later after I catch my breath.
