Online gaming

I play rogue srear online with msn,the problem is I frequently have a high latency while playing and "lag" hence I get booted from games by server.
How can I lower my latency?
My system = 1ghz athlon
256 meg ram
56k modem
32meg ge force 200 card.

I my modem speed is generally ok and I try not to play with very low latency players or cable (broardband).

Any hints would be appreciated.

Ok, can you answer some more questions for me? What kind of modem, and have you tried reinstalling or updating the drivers? Do you always play on the same server, or is a friend hosting the server. Also, do a traceroute to the server, there may be a server in between you that's lagging you. I have the same problem, my DSL goes through alter.net and makes my ping jump from an average of 60-70 to almost 200 in TFC.

To tracerout, open MSDOS and type tracert www.servername.com

Mayne some of this will help.
