"Hiccups" Problem with NHL 2002 and XP!

I know NHL 2002 is not "officially" XP compatible but I can install it and it plays great (at least for a while!) without having to use the "Compatibility Mode".
After a while however, it will suffer from gameplay "hiccups" (I don't know what other term to use to describe it. During gameplay, the screen will freeze up for a millisecond, then play smooth for a couple of seconds before hiccuping again)
When I first install NHL 2002, it always plays smooth. But if I don't play the game for a while or install other programs, it will hiccup again when I go back to playing it. I close out all other programs before entering the game but it still hiccups.
I end up having to uninstall the game and deleting the NHL 2002 folder and the reinstalling it.
I thought that there might be some other program that I might have installed that might have caused this problem. But I was just playing the game last night without any problems and I didn't make any changes to my pc this morning when I tried to play NHL 2002 again. But the hiccups came back!!
I can't figure out what could be causing this. The only way to get rid of the hiccups is by reinstalling the game! There has to be something else causing this problem.
This is the only game I have that's giving me this problem.
Does anyone have any ideas??
Thanks in advance!

Might sound silly but have you tried Defragmentation/Scandisk?

Or even viruses infecting that NHL folder?

Thanks,

I have Panda Antivirus Platinum. I run the virus check for my entire system about every 3 days. I always update my Virus software and have never had (knock on wood!) any viruses.
I'd guess the hiccups/choppy play might be caused from some program running in the background but I don't know what it could be.
Like I said, I close out all other programs before running the game. And if there is some program running in the background, why wouldn't it cause the choppy play ALL the time?
