Cable Modems and Quake Pings.

Hi all,
Those who know me, know that I am a Quake fanatic.
I am currently running a Motorola SB4100 Cable Modem, running at download speeds of 512kb/s My Cable company FINALLY got round to increasing the service to 1mb/s. My question here is is it worth it? I generally do not require anything faster than I have, but there is one thing I would pay more for!!!Will my ping reduce if I move to the faster service and if so, how much by?
I get around a 30ms ping most of the time. I have a fairly complicated setup on my games PC, so I lose some ping doing a DHCP server. That costs about 5ms, but, it's almost worth it! (almost!). So, if I am getting 30ms with a 512 modem, what will I get with a 1mb modem?????? I have a nasty feeling you are going to say 30ms - which is why I ask the question!

seems to me that unless the server gets closer to you or starts sending more information, it should stay about the same..JMO

I think it depends on provider and server overheads, but I am not sure what they are. Increasing bit rate x 2 reduces time x 2, so in theory the ping should fall to 15ms. But I bet it won't. The reason I say that is that I know a 100mb network still runs with a 5ms ping so the relationship is not directly proportional.

Hmm!

Send a message via AIM to Xayd
Seeing as the game is only using 8-10k a sec max, and Quake uses smaller packets than other FPS games on top of that, I don't see why it would go down any either.

Confirms the theory then.
I will post the results! I might well get the faster connection anyway, just to see!!!
