Geforce 3 cards
Hi
I am looking at getting a Geforce 3 card. I am interested in two and they are the Creative Labs Geforce 3 TI 500 and the Guillemot Prophet 3 ti 500. What is the difference in the cards as they both have the same chipset? Does it matter which manufacturer you get it from? Is there a better manufacturer for the Geforce 3? |

Both cards have Nvidia GPUs and are based on the Nvidia reference design (suggested layout of the board components). Each manufacturer sticks to the reference design somewhat, but will modify it to make their card standout above the competition and/or garner interest from a certain portion of the market. For example some of the cards come with DVI (Digital Video Input) so that you can run a digital flatscreen monitor with the videocard as well as a standard SVGA input. Or other manufactures use faster RAM and some of them do other things like put heatsinks on the RAM to help with heat dissipation.
Since they are based off of the same reference design, you should be guaranteed that any of the cards will perform at some median level. You'll want to check out reviews of the various cards at sites that review hardware such as: http://www.tomshardware.com/ http://www.reviewbooth.com/ http://www.anandtech.com/ As far as I know, both Creative Labs and Guillemot both make good products, which will probably not disappoint you.

Personal vote, I would go for the creative out of the two. Not the sharpest knife in the draw, but won't let you down.

I would go with the Hercules. They're one of the best makers of Nvidia based video cards in the industry, IMO.
