Unreal Revisted
I found this little review of Unreal. What interests me is the reviewer's joy in re-playing the game with a better graphics card and system a few years later.
http://www.rageunderground.com/artic...alreview.shtml When Unreal was released, it was optimsed for a Voodoo 2 (preferably 2 16mb cards working in SLI mode). But even those with two cards had to tweak the game quite a lot if they didn't have a top of the range Pentium 2 or the new P3. However, the game was so advanced and demanding that even big rigs were getting slowdown in outdoor battles. With the advent of Unreal 2, this little review has whetted my appetite to go back and revisit that unforgiving planet and see it, in all it's glory, through a geoforce 2 or a Radeon. It's been a few years since I frantically tried to load an Eightball as two or three Skaarj closed in on me. Sometimes it's nice to go back and visit old friends.

i agree totally... i have been playing unreal 1 at school lately to pass the time, but i have yet to play it with my new geforce 2 on my comp. at home. the graphics should be even better than they were before on my tnt2. that was a good review, as most are that review Unreal. i can't wait to try it with better graphics and multiplayer support(which can't be done from school, well it could but i don't feel like messing with settings and possibly getting in trouble). As i have said before Unreal 2 will kick a** if it is anything close to be like Unreal 1. I am saving for a new system right now just so i can play Unreal 2 with some jaw-dropping graphics.

Please refresh my memory, its been awhile since I played Unreal-- were any patches made(like the ones that came out for UT) to make it play better on D3D? You've whetted my appetite while I wait for SS:SE to give Unreal another go through. I remember the first time through that the graphics and level designs just blew me away.

lol, the graphics aren't quite as good as I remember them. But 4X antialiasing helps. However, this game is as fun as any I've played. Curious, I remember the Skaarj's being harder to kill the first time I played-- must be all that UT pratice.
Make sure you get the latest patch (226) so you have the UT D3D engine and the better quality sound effects. |

hey prew,
i felt the sameway you did when i restarted playing the game after all these... months. It wasn't too long ago that the skaarj were almost invincible, or at least they seemed that way to me. Now I seem to cut through them like butter. One thing I do remember is that there are a lot of single player maps. Its amazing that I still remember how to get through them all. Now with the 226f patch, many levels have reflective surfaces that weren't there before. The game still looks awesome, and is still a blast to play because of the great level design. Oh, and getting a few friends together to help you blast through the single player levels as a team is still a blast! Peace |

I agree the graphics don't seem as fantastic now as they were at the time but I they've held up pretty well. Some of the levels are still beautiful. The Sunspire and Chizra - Nali Water God Temple are two of my favourites. It's the mixture of excellent level design, exploration, storyline, and music that still makes this a great game. Not to mention the hundreds of extra single player levels you can download. In that way, it's like Halflife, excellent longevity and value for money. |
