I'm trying to upgrade my Voodoo 3 2000 drivers to the ones released by 3dfx Underground (Website: http://www.3dfxunderground.cjb.net) last week.
I havent installed any Voodoo drivers actually yet - just the ones installed during a clean Windows XP installation when XP recognises the card. In the hardware details on XP it shows the info below: Model: 3dfx Voodoo3 Driver: 3dfxvsm.sys 03 October 2001 Supported The instructions on the new drivers say 1) Remove all previous 3dfx drivers and 3dfx Tools installations, and delete all 3dfx registry information. 2) Install the VoodooXP drivers manually via Device Manager. 3) Reboot. 4) Run setup.exe to install 3dfx Tools. 5) Reboot. My question - how do I actually go about point 1. (The installation fails if I ignore this step)? Any help would be appreciated as I have a demo of Medal of Honour which I would dearly like to try but cant until I get the latest Voodoo drivers that support XP. |

Hi Bobdog,
I'm suprised. I thought XP came with it's own Voodoo drivers. So XP installed the drivers for the Voodoo, then those drivers are supported by XP. Try running DXDiag.exe (it's in the DX folder) and testing the Voodoo. If it passes all the tests, then Voodoo drivers are loaded and you don't need to update yet. With a new OS like XP, I would suggest letting it breath for a while with the drivers you have. Just wait and see if the "newer" drivers cause problems with XP before rushing to install them. Anyway, that's just my advice. Last edited by mike breck; 01-20-2002 at 04:19 PM. |

Thanks Mike
Running DXDiag showed no problems so I assume my issue doesnt lie there and the drivers are OK. I think the problem I have then lies around the program trying to load the XP GL drivers rather than the Voodoo ones (I'm only summising this from other links/discussions on this site http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...ht=wolfenstein ) I posted this issue earlier but got no responses so I guess Im back to square one. I might just go out and buy an NVidia card and be done with it. |

Sorry to hear that Bobdog,
Here is the basic procedure for manually uninstalling the Voodoo Drivers. http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...109#post124242 However, this is for Win9x. Just be very careful in the XP registry. Back up the system before deleting files and reg entries. If things go wrong then system restore should correct them. If you look in in the Tips and Tricks section, I have posted info about two programs which will back up the XP registry. Ideal for work like this. I've used ERS for years and it is very simple and reliable. HTH |
