Gaming:To XP or not XP?
I'm sure this ones been asked before but if someone can advise as want to make sure I'm doing the right thing :>)
Basically I'm getting mightily fed up with the amount of times Win 98SE crashes and am serisouly considering moving to XP as have heard this is more stable. I use my PC 95% for games so these are my top priority, will I see any significant improvememnt or drop off of in gaming performance if I move to XP? My system is Athlon 1.4, 512meg2100 ram, 32meg Geforce MX (soon to move to tasty Geforce titanium500), 40hdd and a gigabyte 7-dx mobo. Thanks! |

Erm forgot to add that I have a NIC and often link up with mates for a network gaming session.
Will networking under XP be compatible with PC's running WIN98 and will it cause any probs? |

well the good news is that i have a winxp box connected to a linux-win98 dual boot and i can share files and stuff perfectly. Also games through the network are just as fast as they were with both computers with win98.

It depends on WHICH games you have. Many older games will not run with XP but there are some newer ones that wont run with it either. This is why I have a Dual Boot system (running XP and 98). Whichever games wont work with XP, I just install it on my 98 Hard Drive. I can say that the games I have installed on my XP Hard Drive run very smooth! Go to this web sight to find out if your game(s) will run with XP: http://www.myshipmates.net/xpsc/gues...esults2&word2=

Yes,
I would say during this transitional period, a dual-boot setup (with each OS on a seperate HD) is the safest way to go. The best of both worlds. |

All my old games and everything work just fine, i set them to run in compatibility mode and they run fine, i even have one of the old leisure suit larry games that runs on 3.1, i just set it to run in compatibility mode for 3.1 and it works just great. I say go for XP, if worst comes to worse you can always take the 25 mins and put 98 back on.
