Sound Cards
I was woundering if anybody could explain the benefits of having a sound card vs using onboard. Does onboard work well for surround sound for gaming/watching dvds?
Thanks, Zach |

Hi Zach,
The main difference between onboard sound and a sound card is quality. I find the onboard sound good enough for Windows use (basic sounds) and some music and mild gaming. But, if you need quality surround sound for movies and gaming the I would definately buy a sound card and disable the onboard sound. The onboard sound also uses more of your CPU resources than a sound card does. Take a look at the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, it's a great card. Hope that helps.

You can also check out the Audigy X-Gamer from Creative Labs.
Get rid of the onboard sound ASAP. It's just too crappy. Plus, make sure you get quality speakers, 4.1 or 5.1, to really exploit the boundaries of the sound card.
