Half life or UT has the most mods I think. I personally like them all. I don't really favor one over the other.

Half-Life all the way! If you buy H-L, and download Counter-strike and Day of Defeat, you'll be set for years!

Another vote for Half-Life. Single player game and story is awesome, and the mods are even better (Counter-Strike, DoD.)

There is just something about UT that I prefer over HL, I don't own Q3. I have seen Q3 before and I think the graphics are very similar to UT(not as in quality, but what you see). I like the HL interface the best(IE W=walk forwards, S=walk backwards...). If you want futurisitc alien killing action get UT or Q3, if you want real-time Afghan VS. USA (terrorist VS. Counter-Terrorist) get Half-Life and Counterstike. I haven't played DOD yet.

I play UT alot, downloaded Quake III demo and did not like it. Maybe its because I am used to UT, but Q3 just did not impress me

Why do you all hate Q3?? I own own all three games and enjoy them all equally. And Logan, all three have the default controls set to W=forward S=backward etc..

Half-Life all the way.
Unreal T entertained me somewhat but I quickly got bored of this MP thing. To me the single player experience is the most important part of a game. And HL has one of the better plots I've seen in a FPS. I've always hated Quake and its progeny. HL was made using the Q2 engine and tell me, does it look like Quake? I think those developers at id Software have pretty dark minds.

None of the above
I would have to say none of the above. I'm a diehard Rune player. It's built on the UT engine. However it's not a shooter game. It's set in the viking era, therefore you use swords, axes and hammers. I prefer it over the shooter games because your up close and personal with your opponent. You can lop there heads and arms off and beat them with it after respawning
As far as Maps mods and skins there are many out there quite dedicated to this aspect of the game. Me on the other hand am just a gamer enjoying and appreciating the fruits of there labors. Please don't make a decision without checking out Rune. You will be quite surprised at how much fun it is. Check out these 2 sites. The first is the official game sight 2nd is the clan I'm a member of. Thanks, DragonBreath-=JuNN=-www.runegame.com www.junnhorde.homestead.com Last edited by DragonBreath; 02-03-2002 at 02:24 AM. |

For some odd reason I like UT better....
Because it doesn't give you a sense of being alone. Honesly, in HL your alone most of the game with a security guard or scientist who will show up occasionally, but I think 90% of the time your alone. I'll admit, I went from Prince of Persia to Doom to Quake2 to HL, and finally to Untreal GOld/Unreal Tournament(picked up both for $19.99), byt the time I got to Q2 I noticed "there is no-one else but me?", I hate that thought(some might not mind it). So close a tie between HL and UT, I'd honesly recomend both of them(I imagine you could pick both up pretty cheap). I myself like MP better because your not the only person, there are others to interact with. The bots on UT have excellent AI, I like them a lot better than the HL bots. Plus they now the objective, if they need to break down a door, they will do it. In HL, if you wanted your engineer to break down a door, you had to force him to do it(I never did get that to work good). Logan |

Nothing plays better than Half-Life on a MadCatz Panther XL Joystick with the trackball for looking. Fun, interesting, easy. That's the way all games should be. Keyboard/Mouse Only takes some of the joy of "just playing the darn game" away.

Descent, Descent][, Descent3. I don't need to say anymore.
I have UT and get bored 5 mins into it. I have Quake also, and same deal, yawn. I guess it's because you're stuck like glue to the ground. Give me the 6 degrees of freedom. PS. I am not trying to start a flamewar, just giving my honest personal opinion. |

I know when you say "Quake" you mean Quake 111 and not the rock-hard, crap your pants, original.
However, let me set the record straight for younger gamers and then you can correct your friends who insist on calling Q111 "Quake". There is only one "Quake" - after that came Quake 11 and Quake 111 - which is the dedicated multiplayer. I'm sorry to be fussy but I take my Quakes very seriously. Half-life, UT, or Quake 111? Half-life is a single player game and the other two are multiplayer (or a single player with bots - a multiplayer simulation); as far as I'm concerned, you can't really compare single and multiplayer games. One of the multi-player versions of Half-life is Counter-Strike, which I think I am correct in saying, is still the most widely played multiplayer on the net. I still believe that Half-life is the greatest single player game ever made. The graphics may be fading, but the storyline is still just as compelling. In fact this game is so good, they should update the engine and re-release it. I would buy it. Counter-Strike, UT, and Quake 111 are all great multiplayers. However, I personally have always preferred UT. However, every serious gamer should try them all and decide on a favourite(s). |

I don't know. I really enjoyed Quake 11. It was one of the few games where you could REALLY stir things up by having your opponents fight each other. Sometimes it could lead to huge pitched battles where you could sit back and
enjoy the fight. That was possible in Doom and Quake, but not to the same extent. Anyway, I am looking forward to Quake 1V. The artwork looks amazing so far and I relish kicking some Strogg butt again. It's good that Quake 1V is returning to it's single player roots. I feel id lost it's way by concentrating soley on multiplayer in Quake 111. Quake 111 should have completed the great single player trilogy AND offered the multiplayer game. However, perhaps Q1V will make amends for that. I hope id do it well - because they are in for some stiff competition from Unreal 2 and the return of the all conquering Duke - " Come get some!". Aaah! Life's never looked so good for an old retro gamer. Last edited by mike breck; 02-08-2002 at 04:37 AM. |
