display driver problems

Last night, I was going through my Device Manager, updating all my drivers. It updated the display adapter,, the one installed now is Standard PCI Graphics Adapter(VGA). I restarted my computer and the dispay is all messed up. I think it has 2 or 16 color now, where before it was capable of 256 color or high or true. I messed up. I need to find the old driver and reinstall it. I think? If I go into the device manager and ask for driver details in display adapter it shows the before mentioned driver and on called vmm32.vxd(vdd.vxd). Is this the original one? If so how can I reuse it? This display is horrible and really getting on my nerves. Also, how can I be sure not to do this again when trying to update my drivers. I sure would appreciate some answers.

Hi jcaretti,

What's your graphics card and Windows version.

Usually you would change to a Standard PCI Graphics Adapter(VGA) before uninstalling the old drivers in Safe Mode and installing the new drivers.
As you have found, this is a very basic driver that displays at 16 colours 640x480.

Go into Safe Mode (hold down the "Shift" key while booting up))and "remove" the Standard PCI Graphics Adapter(VGA). Restart your PC and it should re-detect the graphics card and install the existing drivers.

If it doesn't find the drivers, then click on the option to show all compatible adapters and your old card should be on the list.

Windows will always build a driver database (i.e. backup the old drivers) before letting you install the new ones.

However it may be worthwhile updating the drivers.

See here for the basic procedure for a Geoforce

Anyway come back with some more info and let us know how you got on.
