hello all,
I was just wondering what determines how high you can set your graphics in a 3d game without loseing performance(lower framerates) besides the video im running on xp

If you can post some of your system's specifications like processor speed, amount of memory, hard drive type and space, motherboard type, video card, etc. we can probably be more beneficial in answering your question.

The short answer is, if you're running a fast rig with plenty of memory, in most cases you can pump the detail settings and resolutions up fairly high without taking a big hit in performance... but it all depends on what type of system you're running.

DELL computer:
optiplex GX240 with pentium4 1.7ghz
memory: 256mb ecc sdram 1 dimm
17 inch monitor
video: ge-force3 ti200(upgraded it)
hard drive: 20gb eide 7200 rpm(approx 10 gigs left to use)
OS: windows XP professional

p.s. my video card has seemed a little slugish lately i used to be able to run it on high quality(resolution800*600 and textures cranked up high) but now it just seems slow. i think it over wrote the old drivers but how would i check this?

That systems seems to be more than enough to get you some hasty frames per second on almost any game. Have you tried different versions of the Detonator drivers? You can get quite a few of the more recent nVidia drivers from TheCtrl-Alt-Del.com. Some of these are executable files that auto-install the drivers, and then ask you to reboot. Some are zipped files that you need to unzip to a folder you can remember. After unzipping them, go update the driver in display properties (I'm not certain of this when dealing with WinXP as I have extremely limited knowledge of this OS) and use the unzipped drivers.

Another thing to check is how many programs you have running in the background while you're playing your games. No matter how fast a machine with it's gobs of memory, if you have alot of resource hungry applications running in the background while you're trying to game, you're going to have problems.

I hope these recommendations are helpful. Maybe someone with more XP knowledge can chime in.

thanks for the reply tire tool. it is probablly all the programs running in the background but i know i can close everything but systray and explorer but how do i know whats what on windows XP? they label it weird.

the good old three fingered salute - CTR-ALT-DEL will bring up the screen to close the programs, I,m at work away from XP, but I beleive the tab you want is labeled applications just like NT
