I bought an Xtasy 5564 64mb AGP graphics card for my computer and it worked but it didn't even work as well as the factory 8mb card that came factory installed with the computer. Come to find out that my AGP slot was only 1.0 compliant and the vidio card required a 2.0 compliant AGP slot. Will a PCI vidio card work just as well as an AGP card? Will I get a big improvement if I go with a PCI vidio card? What are the benefits of having the latest type of AGP slot on your motherbourd as opposed to PCI? I'm contemplating building a new computer but I still might upgrade the vidio card in this one and keep it as a second computer if doing so will make a big difference in gaming. My computer is an IBM Aptiva with PIII 450 & 256mb RAM with a EAX PCI sound card.
Thanks, Bozwth |

Hi bozwth,
A PCI card should work just as good as an AGP one, you shouldn't notice any difference. The only problem is that currently the fastest PCI cards you can get are a GeForce2 MX or ATI Radeon.

Accellerated Graphics Port.
Yes there is a difference, but when going AGP it is best to go with a 2x or 4x compliant Board. Most of the AGP cards on the market today are 2x and or 4x compliant. But a high end PCI card on your existing system is a viable solution as DR Z recommended. |

Elsa makes a PCI 32mb card which is called something like the 511. According to
benchmarks in one of UK PC mags, it compared very favourably to a Geoforce2 mx and was a very viable option to AGP. Sometimes the performance of a video card is done to the production quality and Elsa have always made uniquely-designed, high-quality cards. Also, to the best of my knowledge, the Radeon series of cards have "Universal" connectors which means they can run at AGP 1.0 or AGP 2.00. So you could always try a Radeon card. However, if you buy an AGP 2.0 compliant mobo in the future, then AGP will give you the best results. HTH |
