i use video editing programs everyday at school... i must say that using a computer is much easier then doing it by hand, having done both. I only use macs Pro Tools version 3 because it is a very powerful very usefull program. But i do have some experience with premier 6. it is easy enough to use. and i have had some problems with it. but those were due to some software conflicts.
Have you had problems with either of these programs -Ryan- |

The only problems I’ve had with Premiere 6 are when I try to make an uncompressed AVI file of the edited DV.
I capture with a Sony DV camcorder, edit with Premiere then use TMPGenc to author the AVI file for Super VideoCD. As SVCD is of a lower quality than the original DV you can understand why I’ve got to get the very best quality AVI file hence the reason I try not to use compression when saving the AVI but it does cause problems when trying to play back that file. It’s as if my PC can’t keep up. As soon as I can afford a DVD writer of some sorts my problems are over. |

Why so complicated, DaveTee ??
Making an AVI out of a DV stream is. . is just pointless. You can't make a stream better than the original, but with AVI you'll lose quality. Just copy your DV stream on the tape, and then edit this dv stream, and finally - without usage of AVI - make the MPEG-2 of this dv. Digitally captured, edited and from native DV format directly in MPEG-2. . there is nothing better. . . RJ

When I capture from the DV source the only option I have is Microsoft DV, which is a compressor. I was told that when I’ve edited the DV I should save as an AVI with no compression which will not compress the file further then get TMPGenc to encode the AVI file to Mpeg2 for SVCD burning.
Is there anyway I can capture without using Microsoft DV? How can I “Export timeline / movie” as an Mpeg2 file directly from Premiere 6? The file “Types” that Premiere allows me to make at this point are as follows….. Microsoft DV AVI Microsoft AVI Tiff sequence Targa sequence Gif sequence Animated Gif Film strip Flc/Fli Windows bitmapped sequence I’d really appreciate anymore input on this thing as I’m pulling my hair out with the whole big prob. |

Well, I don't have a DV cam and don't do DV video editing, but my friend does and we made a movie for a school project.. . now we make a DVD out of it.
What I can tell you is that he doesn't use Premiere for capturing, he uses the tool that came with his dv card. . which is from Dazzle. . DV.NOW if I remember correctly. He used Premiere for the complete video editing, and then exported the movie as MPEG-2, using the Ligos LSX MPEG-2 codec. You need a mpeg-2 codec plugin so that you can use premiere for output. TMPGEnc is a good encoder, but it's not a plugin, therefore it can't be used by premiere. I think you can acquire the codec alone. . all I know is that all was bundled with the dv.now: Dazzle capture tool, Adobe Premiere 5.x, LSX MPEG-2 codec and Sonic DVDit!. Anyway the movie on the dv tape is compressed. When you select Microsoft DV it should work well as long as it does not recompress the file. No experience with it, though. When my friend comes back from vacation I'll experiment a little with his PC and cam. .. RJ |
