It depends on your budget, if you want to go top-of-the line fastest, go with the 4600. Otherwise, I think the 4400 will be plenty fast for any games.

Are you planning on replacing the Radeon 8500 you have listed in your system specs?

There should be a noticeable improvement between the GF3 and the GF4, however not a big one between the 4400 and the 4600, and not worth the extra $100 in my opinion. I was asking about the Radeon because the 8500 is next to the GF4 in performance, so I didn't see the need for an upgrade.

Articles I have read suggest most GeForce4 Ti 4400 will overclock to 4600 speeds, so if you have good system cooling the 4400 would be a good buy. I'm waiting for the 4200 to come out.

I was wondering, what exactly is better about the GF4 over the GF3? Does it have any new special features such as the GF3's pixel shaders, or is it just speed? If it's speed I really don't see much of a need for it as long as your games play with FPS that don't get under 30-40. The only reason I would get a GF4 would be if I was building a brand new system that I would want to last me a while, or as an upgrade over a GF2 or under.

I would go with the VisionTek, I've read about a few problems with PNY card quality recently.

Wait until games are optimised for DirectX 8.1, there are only 2 that I know of right now, until then it's just a waste of money, get a Geforce 3 cos when games are made for the "4" something newer will be on the market anyway. Hell just get another 8500 and save that money too.

hi,
i just got my 4400 up and running. It scored 7,700 on 3dmark 2001 and its the first board I have EVER used that keeps up with EA's NHL 2002 as good as the venerable voodoo5 i had. I have not noticed much improvement in many other games though. Medal of Honor still looks a bit blocky when you move quickly and Counterstrike still looks the same although I cant be sure what fps i'm getting as it seemsd stuck at 60 when running net_graph 3. I haven't noticed any other issues as of yet though and it was definitley worth 300.00 bucks. Nelly |

I would suggest Leadtek for any Nvidia card. There simply beautiful. I have the gf3 ti200 128ddr on the system listed below and score 6,600 on 3dmark2001se at default settings. The software and games that come with it are a big step over what I recieved with a PNY card I recently returned. It comes with an svideo to rca adapter for those tv's without svideo. I love my vid card. It rocks. God I cant imagine what it would be like to run the gf4ti4600 in my system, I would never get any sleep. Hehe. DB

Hi Wolfie44
I just read the latest issue of maxpc and they said that the gf4 is way ahead of the gf3 in this way: you can turn on quincunx and get 4fsaa quality with barely a hint of performance drop.
You should read the mag for all the details and benching. See you From what I know about the glasses, you have to be able to run twice the refresh rate for them to work, so play around with that. Say 120 may be a good starting point. Last edited by Blakhart; 03-31-2002 at 03:01 PM. |
