Which Game is the Biggest POWER HOG?!
I play mostly Sports and Racing PC Sims. While I don't have the ultimate gaming pc, it has handled all of the games that I've purchased so far with relative ease.
But after purchasing Nascar Racing 2002 (Sierra), I can say that my pc has met its' match!! This game is the biggest power hog I've yet to play-by far! I've read that even the most powerful gaming pc's take a major hit in framerate with this sim. I would like opinions from you hardcore gamers on what game is the most demanding on pc resources. I've never played Quake 3 but I know this game is always the "benchmark" for many pc tests. But I'll bet NR 2002 would give Quake 3 a run for its' money!

I've heard that any new version of the Falcon flight sim will bring even the fastest system down to its knees.

Medal of Honor seems to do a pretty good number on my system. I played, and beat, it and RTCW in the last 2 weeks. RTCW ran better by far. I could actually play it at 1024x768. My Radeon VIVO just couldn't handle 1024 in MOH. Had to run 800x600, medium or low on all graphics settings, and still hit 10-19 FPS in spots.

It all really depends on how well the game was made. Some games like Tribes 2 & Deus Ex arent that pretty but perform poorly on pretty much any system, and always will because they just suck at direct3d.
It depends on your operating system too. I've found the a lot of games work in windows 2000 but cannot perform quite as well as they do in a 9x environment, esp Medal of Honor. Quake 3 was taxing on a top of the line computer in '99 but now with a good system you can crank about 80 - 100 FPS on it at 1600x1200. It's used as a bench because everyone's used to using it as a bench I suppose. christo418 - Black & White perform pretty well on my system at maximum detail, even with 2x anti-aliasing. What bugs me about that game is they don't allow you to configure the resolution, color depth etc. Oh well it's boring anyway

hey Gnerma
i think the quakes have been used as benchmarks because they provide a utility that allows the same test to be run on every computer, so results will be fairly standardized. that and quake seems mildly popular. as for deus ex, isn't it built with the unreal engine? is the stuff they added what messes things up? |

I have played many games, and I must say Nascar 4 and Nascar 2002 are a killer on even the best systems.I have seen people that are just tickled to get 20 frames per second. My sytem wont even come close to running at full graphics running, but I hope to be able to come close when i get my new GF 4400 Ti.

Greedo - as far as I know the original unreal engine was optimized for 3dfx & had bad direct3d & openGL support. It was not even part of the original release. Deus Ex should crank 100+ FPS easy on my system but its choppy at best.
Yeah Medal of Honor & RTCW run on the Quake 3 engine. |

Gnerma-
I was running Black and White on a system similar to steady teddy's. WW2 Online: I don't know how it is now, but when it was fairly new (and free trial), I had to upgrade my RAM to 512 to load the maps, and they are HUGE.

Hi Shifty,
That system will run it nicely. I HIGHLY recommend the game. But I do recommend buying a steering wheel and pedals to use with it(you can get a cheap set for under 50 dollars). The game is great to play online, but please use caution because racing online is HIGHLY addictive It very realistic also.Dale Earnhardt Jr and a few other real drivers are fellow sim racers.Dale Jr. was even a beta tester for the game.it takes A LOT of practice, but boy is it fun!! |

Games like Deus Ex, great game by the way, should run perfectly on software renderer if you have a nice system. I know you all want to show off your nice Geforce 3s and all... I still marvel at how I used an 8 MB Starfighter AGP up until 2 months ago. But sometimes if they are poorly ported for OpenGL it will run better with software rendering.

Biggest power hog? Oh, that's a no brainer. Everquest, post Luclin, has to be the most demanding game ever. Especially if you get in an area where there are 10+ people on screen at once. Those polys can really start to add up. Just find a site about it and look at some rescent screenshots. Graphics are even better than Tribes 2.

I've gotta agree with the last poster. Everquest with its latest graphics update is by far the biggest resource hog. With an athlon 1.1Ghz 512DDR RAM GF3 Ti500 some zones will bring me down to a crawl (5-10 fps). I haven't played for a while, so it may be things are better now that the expansion has been out for a while, and they've been able to release some patches. Even still, EQ is a monster.

go pick up a game called Dark Age Of Camelot
dont get me wrong, this is my favorite game! this MMORPG has taken over my life but it requires a system a little over par i have a geforce2mx400 64mb and, well, i thought it ran fine until i got into realm vs realm wars 300 ppl all casting spells and fighting does a number on it, so im thinking of upgrading to a geforc3 or 4 |

DAoC performs like crap because the client leaks memory, I play it as well
.It's a fun game, too bad the people who made it can't support it. The 3D engine for it was outsourced and is buggy at best. |

I have to agree with EQ Player and DNixon. Everquest is a Hog of Hogs. Sucks my system resources dry and takes up alot of memory And the frame rates can get very slow. Its the hoggiest game Ive played and I have played alot of games.
"Come Get Some" Duke3D still installed

Nascar 4 runs constantly in the 70fps with everything turned up EXCEPT the stands! is it worht the extra $ to get Nascar 2002, is it much different from 4? I read in PCgamer that nascar2002 is just a $40 patch of nascar4. What do you think? also i have about $100 to spend on a stearing wheel with pedals, i would also like the gearshift with a clutch, anyone know where i could find this?

Im my opinion Nascar 2002 is alot better than Nascar 4.The sounds are 100 times better, the graphics are great, the AI run super compared to N4.Plus you will find more servers for online racing with 2002.As for a wheel, the best(but its a lot of money) is a Thomas Super Wheel. This is a Non-Force feedback wheel. If you what Force Feedback, then the Act Labs Force RS,and the Logitech MOMO are Highly recommended. The Act Labs Performance Pedals have a clutch, and they will work with any wheel.Act Labs also has a shifter.Heres a link to the site.

I dont know of anything with a clutch and shifter for that price. You can go with something like a Thrustmaster Pro Digital 2.I think they are like 50 bucks. The lower cost wheels will perform very well.
