Serious Sam Problem

Ok, its pretty simple actually:

I got Serious Sam some time ago and just installed it. When I goto run it I get a error saying the following:

Serious Sam was unable to find display mode with OpenGL acceleration.
Make sure you install proper drivers for your video card as recommended
in documentation and set your desktop to 16 bit (65536 colors).
Please see ReadMe file for troubleshooting information.

I am running a VooDoo3 1000 (2000 OEM) w/ WindowsXP Professional. I did try to run the game in compatibility mode for Windows 98/Me and I ran it in 16-bit Color like it said.

Please Help. Thanks.

Do have the 1.05 patch installed?

This is from the Serious Sam forum (several posts on this issue):
http://dynamic3.gamespy.com/~serious...ghlight=voodoo

I'm not clear which version of the game you have, First Encounter or Second Encounter. But for your configuration, what you need to do is pretty much the same, as is covered in the readme that comes with the second.

If you have the first game (First Encounter), sooner or later (probably best leave till you finish the rest of this), be sure to download and apply the 1.05 patch. As of yet, there is no general patch for the second game.

If you have the second game (Second Encounter), you will likely need the Voodoo specific patch that Croteam has released, to fix the problem of extremely long load times. There is a posting from DEN (Croteam's Dean Sekulic) that is kept stuck near the top of this forum that contains the link to that patch.

For Voodoo 3 2000 PCI (which is what I have) with Win95/98/ME (don't know about NT, 2000 or XP), you need to install and use the beta 1.04.01 3dfx Voodoo 4/5 drivers (yes, they also support the Voodoo Banshee, 2 and 3). This is the version of drivers tested/recommended by Croteam, as discussed in the second game's readme file. NOTE: Before installing them, be sure to uninstall any 3dfxTools entry that shows up in the Windows Control Panel's Add/Remove Software list. Then install DirectX8.1 or later. The www.voodoofiles.com site mentioned above is a good source for the 3dfx drivers. DirectX 8.1 or later is available from Microsoft (and possibly from the CD-ROMs that accompany some game or PC magazines).

Then you will likely also want to download and install the WickedGL drivers (www.wicked3d.com, free non-time limited eval version available), as they tend to provide better speed and to reduce visual artifacts (strange colors, etc.). I use the "high resolution" option/version. The catch is that you will need to disable the WickedGL drivers if you plan to edit or model and then reenable them to play again. This is accomplished via either the WickedGL desktop shortcut that provides a game specific quick install/uninstall capability or through the use of a couple of batch files and associated desktop shortcuts that rename the opengl32.dll in the c:\program files\croteam\serious.......\bin directory to something else (example: opengl32.wkd) when you want to edit or model and then rename it back to opengl32.dll when you want to play. (You don't have to install and use WickedGL, but most folks with Voodoo cards seem to prefer it for playing Serious. WickedGL does require the presence of the 3dfx drivers and DirectX discussed earlier.)

Hope that helps.
