what are MODS?
No, seriously, what are MODS for games? I've seen the word several times, and I don't fully understand what it is. I know it has to do with games elements... but...
thanks! pstj |

Modifications of course :)
Some game developers make some of the source code available to the general public so they can make mods. Mods are like someone doing a 'remix' of the game that you can download and play. Just like a remix of a song the mod can be very similar to the original or it can be much different.
The biggest and most successful mod ever is Counter Strike for Half Life. I've only seen mods for FPS' but some RPG's that will come out this year are jumping on the bandwagon and we may see some mods for them. |

Just to add, you need to have to original game installed to play the mods. The most popular ones are for games like Half-Life and Quake 3, FPS' like Gnerma mentioned.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
I think this MOD trend started with Duke Nukem 3D. Along with the game, the CD contained the Build Engine, which the developers used to make the game. A lot of user made levels came out. Since then, developers everywhere started giving the tools along with the games.

Yeap, and thankfully it caught on. I haven't messed with Half Life or Quake much, but UT was all but open-source. Everything that existed in the game was documented in the editor they used to make it, which you got with the retail CD.
Last news I heard from UT mods was the Tac Ops guys had been contracted by the US Government to make training sims for CIA/Secret Service agents. I think that counts as progress ![]() I wanted the White House map they made for a screw-around DM server but the damn thing is classified

I thought Doom was open sourced so people could make more levels, which should count as a mod. Just thinking of trying to paint sprites for Doom or Duke 3d makes me really thankful for repainting skins.

Doom MODs could be done. But Duke 3D kicked off the boom of MOD making because the Build Engine was easier to work with then Doom tools. Plus, while you needed several tools for making Doom levels, the BE had everything you needed for making Duke's.
Plus, the Doom tools were not released along with the game as were Duke's tools. (Plus, Duke 3D had more personality than Doom. So people liked it more. (To me it was better than Quake). Me, I stopped playing Doom for good the moment the Duke 3D one-level demo was installed onto my HD). |

Some Mods are even just scripts that change basic configuration of the server/client. Like Oz and AdminMod for Half-Life. Hooray for software companies that release editable software to the masses. Hooray!!
