72fps with 1280x1024 with a GeForce 2 Pro ???
That's what the chip can do. You won't notice more fps anyway. Above 30 it's smooth. Even if we say above 50fps is smooth, then 72 is more than you need. RJ

Yeah, 72FPS @ 1280x1024 is awesome, it can't get any better.

Your brain can't even notice higher frame rates. TV and movies are both far below 72 FPS and those are perfectly smooth to most people. 40 or 400 would look the same to anybody.

I'd like to argue on this. Above 30 is definately NOT smooth (to my tastes) in CS. I can clearly tell the difference between 80 and 99 FPS. Maybe for TV and such, but for Games, I think it matters more.

I gotta jump in on this one too. When you say 72 FPS are you talking constant? Or is it when you are running through a map with no action happenning? I can stop and stare at a wall and get 72 fps steady, and that is the fastest I have ever had, not one fps more. But!.....if I come running out the door into the bombsite A area and there are a handful of opponents out there all shooting at me, things definitely slow down. I see 18 to 24 when the action is heavy. That is a death knell if your opponents are running 72 constant. I'd love to get that.
Check it out and let me know what you get under "duress". BTW, I have a Radeon VIVO 64 with a 1 Gig PIII.

I get 99 staring at a wall with basic movement, and in a heavy firefight it drops to around 70-80. My refresh rate is set to 100, and this is a geforce 2 GTS.

That is a super framerate! Wish I had gone with the GeForce. But, will have to wait for my next system build. What CPU have you got that Geforce hooked up to?

Using the system specified below, I pull the 99 max framerates displayed in the cl_showfps 1 command. I have a button bound to the command "timerefresh" and I hit it occasionally in different settings. The range is always 250 - 320 in 1280x960x32 w/o AA. With AA, framerates drop dramatically. I will also agree that I can tell a huge difference in fps of 30 compared to 100.
My sig appears to be gone... my system is Athlon 1400 w/ GeForce 3 64mb. |

Did PC Mech remove sigs with system specs in them? I removed my system specs from the sig and it works. I'm confused now.

If you use the Quick Reply form at the bottom of the page you need to click the signature button. Also on the Quick Reply form you need to click the Send Email button if you want to be notified of responses to your post. Apparently these are default to the "off" position.
If you post the old fashion way then your custom settings will be used. |

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't a framerate higher than the refresh rate of the monitor pointless? If the monitor refreshes at 75 Hz, isn't a framerate above that worthless? After all, if the monitor repaints the screen 75 times a second, it doesn't matter if the graphics card pumps out 150 frames a second, does it?
