GeForce 4 blues.

Well, okay, after everything I said, I could not resist buying a GeForce 4 4600.

I must admit, that I was as disappointed as I thought I would be! The card happily ran up showing 90+ FPS in Quake Arena at 1024x768. It maintained that at 1280x1024 and again at 1600x1200. It showed a slight decrease and started to strain itself at 2048x1536 - but most of the time was just fine! Wow! That’s quick then! Nice. Well, that kept me amused for thirty seconds, then I switched the res back to 1024x768 and continued playing same ole same ole levels. Bam, splat, bam, splat, bam, splat.

Disappointed because there is no game to do the card justice. But (sigh) I knew that before I bought it. Kinda makes you wonder why I bought it then, doesn't it?!

I admire your honesty Fred.

I used to get excited about going out and buying the latest and greatest. Now I get a bigger thrill out of stumbling across a great bargain. I must be getting old.

Last year I picked up two 20GB Maxtor Diamond Max HDs for the price of one. Followed that by picking up a nice little Hercules 3D Prophet 11 MX 64MB for less than half-price.

The feeling of smug satisfaction after both purchases was well worth waiting for.

Of course to play that game you've got to be patient, keep your eye on the ball, and then move in for the kill quickly.

Great fun.

I agree Fred! I was even disappointed when I switched from my trusty Voodoo3 2000 16mb AGP to a brand new Geforece 2 Pro 64MB last year. The difference should've been overwhelming, but I didn't see much increase in speed or graphics quality in the games I was playing at the time. But I doubt the Voodoo card would hold up with some of the new games they are putting out these days.

Yeah, nothing worse than an upgrade that doesn't seem like one. Well, at least you can tell people you have the latest and greatest video card (for now) and get "oohs" and "ahhs".

hi mike,

how could you be happy with getting a 3D prophet II MX64 ???!?!?
Just my personal opinion from my shoddy past with any of that range of cards, but I wouldnt accept one if someone gave me one!
I had a intel 82810E 4MB card that ran games better than that card

I think you forgot to mention why we really do these things.

Yes the card is overkill for last years games and even some current stuff, BUT the stuff that will be coming out this year and next will be stunning on the GF4 Ti's and may not run to well on some of the older GF2 and GF3 cards.

My new system will have the GF4 Ti4600 because I'm planning ahead.

Ha ha! Okay, Cobra, I'll mail it.

I sold a 1 year old GeForce 2 GTS 64 DDR on ebay for an amazing $103.00 My wallet can't believe it's luck. That kinda help finance the 4.

You know that is part the reason I upgrade more often these days. Because you can sell stuff on ebay for such a good price provided you don't let it get too out of date.

Jim,
You are right. Really, I am just getting excited about Doom III and Quake IV and there is nothing else to do but constantly upgrade the hardware in anticipation!!!!!!!!!!

Geeze, $103 for that card? lucky...

I haven't found the group of "technologicaly challenged" e-bayers who want to buy an AD11 for a nice price yet(doubt I ever will)...
