PNY GeForce 2 MX400 64MB
this is the grafix card i have, and seeing as you all seem to know so much about all this stuff, could you tell me, is this a any-way decent grafix card?
Im not talking about comparing it to any well high end £1000 cards for like doing animation at pixar or anything, but for home use. Mostly used for editing lots of detailed big file sized pictures, playing new games where they like you to have at least a 32MB card, you know, stuff like Max Payne etc.

I have an MX400 64MB card, and I really do not like it at all. It's truly old technology, and you cannot get good picture coupled with good performance. Depending on your budget, I would recommend the following cards in order of increasing price made by VisionTek, LeadTek, Asus or Gainward/Cardexpert:
Geforce 2 Ti 64MB Geforce 3 Ti 200 64MB Geforce 4 Ti 4400 128MB Also, the Geforce 4 Ti 4200 128MB is coming out in a few weeks, it'll be about $80 less than the Ti 4400. Don't get a Geforce 3 Ti 500, you can get the Ti 4200 or4400 for about the same price, since Ti 500 prices vary so much. Hope it helps By the way, the MX400 offers good performance as long as you don't turn on image enhancing options like 4x anti-aliasing or anistropic filtering. Upgrade if you can though

Hi Spyda,
You said, and "playing new games." If you get a GF MX card, you'll be hurting when the newer games come out, because all GF 4 MX cards ARE NOT true GeForce 4 cards!!! They're not even as good as a GF 3. They are crippled cards and do not support the features and instruction set of the GF 4. If you're budget won't go with a non-MX GF 4, try for at least a GF 3. It'll be OK for editing photos and the like, but it's not really a "gaming" card. TwoRails |

The GF2MX is a decent card and should work fine for current games given that you run at a lower resolution and turn down the details and such, but you'll have a hard time playing any newer games. For serious gaming look into getting a GF3Ti or GF4 (like TwoRails mentioned, not MX, those are always crippled) card and it should last you a while.

Like I mentioned in another thread, Tom's Hardware made a chart comparing a long list of video cards, check it out for a good overview of expected performance (benchmarks at the bottom).

Spyda, I have to agree with furious92, this card is crap! I have the exact same model and I am fixing to go back to my 32Mb Diamond Viper II Z200 , it rocked compared to this card.

I would wait for the new geforce ti4200 64 MB. It will give you the most performance for your money.
Here is a good review of the card: http://www.guru3d.com/review/nvidia/geforce4ti/ |

Those MX cards are fine for a lot of people, but you sound like you would like to do a bit of gaming. I have a Geforce 2 GTS, which is a step up from the MX's and it's already starting to show its age a little. I'm not sure which one I'll upgrade to, probably the 4400. Now for you, I'd get a Geforce 3 ti200 if money's tight, or a Geforce 4 4400 if you have a bit more to spend.

Greetings Spyda...
If you have a gf2mx, set it to 16 bit color, no fsaa, no anisotropic filter, and fast mipmap linear mipmap for best performance. Then set your resolution (in games at least) to 1024x768. The resolution of 1024x768 will get you a better picture. This will depend on your system being able to cope with 1024x768, as well as your monitor being of good enough size. 1024x768 on a 15 inch mon looks kinda small... This will be a nice card for any directx7 game if set up right. If you have stuttery game play, check to see if your antiviral is running. Fast mipmap may make it jittery too so keep an eye out for that and disable mipmapping if it does. Cheers M8. |
