Your graphics card will work with either SDRAM or DDR Ram. It doesn't have to differentiate between the two. It will probably work faster if you've got DDR memory on your motherboard, but only because DDR itself is faster.

You can put a GeForce or Radeon on nearly any motherboard as long as the motherboard has the right slot, and meets the requirements of the graphics card.

I think I may of ask that question wrong, see if this makes any difference...If I buy a card that says DDR, will it still run with sdram? It just performs better with DDR. I have a guillemot maxi gamer phoenix 16 mb right now as far as I can tell from their website I have loaded latest drivers that supposdely support open gl. How can I tell if my card is doing it. I looked in the DM and it seems I already had that driver.

The DDr that is specified for your card is the type of mem thaht the card have on it, not the kind of memory you should use...

It doesn't matter what kind of memory you have on your MB, but as tiretool said, DDR perform better than SDRAM

If you are buying new, do yourself a favor and get a gf3, they are typicaly around $138 or so.....
A ATI 8500 would give better image quality but may not be as fast. I do not have a clue as to the price of a 8500...
If you are finding it hard to get the cash to get a gf3/8500, a gf2ti will play any directx7 game quite well.
In the end I say get a gf3/8500. You will not regret it.
You may even find one here on the forums cheap like I did!
Some thoughts...
