Old guys.....
I was wondering if there are any "OLD GUYS" out there that successfully compete with these youngsters in gaming. By competeing, I mean "ever win at" it with them. I play Starcraft the Expansion set with my son who thoroughly trounces me but in order to keep me playing lays off untill I can at least defend what pitifully little I have amassed by the time our agreed upon time to begin attacking one another. I also tried to go out and get better on BattleNet, but even the newbie's take one look at my stats and blanch at the thought of having to ally with a old dolt like me. I am very competitive but do not jump out when the going get rough. I do not blame them though....I truely do suck! Does anybody have suggestions to get at least a little better?

well, compared to my little brother i'm old, and i'm sorry to say he whoops on me every time we play any of the half-life family.
but as far as "old guys" go, my dad (40, no that old) successfully competes with my brothers and i in a few games. by "competes," i mean he doesn't lose too terribly. we mostly play first person shooter games. he tried playing age of empires with me, but i don't think it was fast paced enough to keep his interest. sort of makes me wonder where i got my short attention span from. he never fails to beat me in monopoly, though! he's always the banker, so i'm sort of suspiscious of that.

My kids got me into game years back when they had Nintendo, they couldn't beat Double Dragon so they handed me the controller, took a bit but I was the only one to beat the game. Then my daughter was dying to get the game Ghengis Kahn, she played it for a while and couldn't figure it out, so once again it was "here dad, you do it", that started my long time strategy game addiction. I can't play Mario to save my life but I can easily build and maintain a better D2 character than my son, when he comes over I am always giving him better equipment than he has, I don't think he has ever gotten a character to Patriarch/Matriarch status, I have several.

My dad whipped my butt every time we played Warcraft 2. He won about 75% of the time, and I suspect he was taking it easy the rest of the time, lol.
I play Counter-Strike, and it's funny because I'm 29 and female, so if I say anything, the kids are always like "how old are you?" or "that's a girl", lol. O well. |

37 here and I have been booted from servers not for bad lang or behaviour but for using my nugget and setting up D that they didn't like. Most of the players are teens, far as I can tell. Oh well, I run my server my way, far be it from me to tell anyone how to run theirs.

smokealotapotimus, whew....what a screename! Anyway, that is my problem, when playing my son, I can never accept the cheats he wants to slip in (mostly for me) as I am really old fashioned about "level playing field" and "play by the rules" kind of thinking. Anyway there aren't any cheats out on the BattleNet so I can't see practicing with any hand holding so to speak. Did any of what I just said make any sense?

At 36, I find games like CS to be completely overwhelming my skills. I cannot react as fast as most of the young punks. The easiest solution I find is to spend more money on my PC and out duel them with technology. I can easily spend $300 on a video card at the drop of a hat that I don't think any of those youngsters can afford. I find that during the brief month or 2 that I am on the cutting edge, I can play evenly. After they catch up it's back to the bottom of the scores.
