tried to update drivers and computer almost crashes!

i have an ATI radeon 7500 video card and i went to www.ati.com to update my drivers. I downloaded the drivers for xp there:

http://www.ati.com/support/products/...&cmdNext=GO%21

but when i installed the drivers and restarted my computer i got a black screen and the computer didn't even start. so i turned off the computer and when i turned it back on it said that there was a serious error that occured and it gave me the option of starting windows normally or starting it how it was before error happened. then i get to my desktop and i get the error report thing and i report the error and it says that it was a serious error. what did i do wrong? Looks like these drivers just came out from what it says on the webpage. are these the right drivers for this card? Any help appreciated. Thanks.

I was reading on the ati site that when the computer hangs it might have to do with BIOS not being updated. What is the procedure i need to go thru to update BIOS? The epox site has updated BIOS that i can download but will this do the same thing that my ATI drivers did and that is give me a black screen on startup? I could also install motherboard drivers? which one should i install first; if any?

Did you uninstall the old drivers before installing the new ones?

Yes uninstall them. Whenever you uninstall a video driver, Windows will just use the generic VGA. Reboot and proceed to install your new drivers (those you downloaded). Besta luck!

PD: of course the display will look awful with the "standard VGA" XP will use when you delete your actual drivers. But that prob will be solved when you reinstall your new drivers.

If you don't know how to flash your bios, don't even attempt it,Epox boards are fairly easy to flash, but study up on it before you try.It must be done with a bootable floppy and not done in Windows.

Well I certainly would be in any hurry to flash my BIOS because a set of video drivers didn't work.

Sometimes new sets of drivers just don't work well in certain systems - be it NVidia or ATI. It always been a fact of life.

Remove all ATI drivers and try the new ones again. If they still don't work, then revert back to the drivers you were using or a set slightly less new from ATI.

Sometimes, you've just got to wait until the next driver release until you achieve compatiblity.

See the manual process for complete driver uninstall here. It refers to NVidia, but it is just the same for ATI, although someone did mention once that there is a utility on ATI driver CD-Rom which can do it.

It's always good practice to uninstall old drivers first - even if they are from the same manufacturer.
