Need help asap, computer freezes non-stop

Well guys, Ive got a problem here,

Until recently, ive been playing online games with no problems, whatsoever. About a week ago, my games just started to freeze non-stop. So I looked to see what the problem may be. I play Half Life-TFC and you can run in 3 modes : software, opengl, and d3d. I can run software quite well, the other 2, which look alot better, freeze when i first join a server when using them. When they freeze they do so on a sound loop thats continuous and I have to reboot each and every time they occur. I do have temperature problems also, about 60 C or so when I play games. Not sure why its so high. These are my specs, any and all help is much appreciated, Ive reinstalled windows about 3 times to no avail each time.

Win 98SE
Biostar M7MIA
AMD Athlon 1.33 w/raid
GeForce 2 Pro 64MB (Drivers are version 28.32)
256 DDR
SB Live
Maxtor 40GB
Cooler Master HSF (obviously not doing its job)

PS. Ive never overclocked anything. And I have formatted 3 times, twice with win98 once with XP.

Do you by any chance have it setup in the BIOS so that "IRQs controlled by OS"? If not, you probably need to. If that Sound Blaster is sharing an IRQ with your video card, you'll have problems until you separate them.

Did you recently install either the sound card or the video card?

Yep, my bios is set to "IRQs controlled by OS.
And the sound and video card are on different IRQ's, 10 and 11 respectively.

Why doesnt anyone else feel the need to help me out, does my topic not sound like Im in desperate need?

remove the case cover. If the freezing stops, it's your temps. Even though 60 c under load is not too bad for an AMD.
How many case fans do you have?

The case has been off for over a month, if it isnt off i get up to 65 degrees C. 2 case fans (one small one, one output) and the Cooler Master HSF.

Is your heat sink seated properly? you might need to remove the Motherboard to get a good look at it.

My T/Bird 1200 266 is running at 38c under load. I think you're running far too hot.

If you have used a thermal pad, then scape it off, clean the CPU and use Artic Silver. That should have a dramatic effect on your CPU temp.

You can get the instructions here

www.articsilver.com

You may also have to consider a better HSF or at least one that has a fan with a higher RPM.

As for the CPU, I assume it was boxed? Non-boxed ones have *no* warranty, and its very easy to screw up the onboard CPU fan. AMD also recommends at least two case fans...

My BIOS hasn't that option, at least not the way you typed it. Is there another description of the same option?

Also, my VC is using IRQ 11, and so are the modem and the sound card. But whenever I try to change it Windows doesn't allow me to do it. How can I change the IRQ for the VC? My computer is crashing a lot while playing Undying!

Rob,

Few things to try:
(The first one is kinda Stupid However just try it for the hell of it.)1.If you have a portable fan, aim it at the hardware and cool it down.
2. As stated above checking the installation of the Heatsink to the Processor... Also if possible use thermal paste from Artic Silver. If you did install the Heatsink improperly, you will be looking at buying a new cpu... An suggestion to co-inside with that; If you end up buying a new cpu that you might have screwed up, go to your local tech store like compusa and see if they could help you properly attach the cpu to the Heatsink.
3. I want you to uninstall all the cards in the machine except for the video card then install the modem into another slot in the PC. Start up some online games and see if it does not crash or anything.
4. For the Heck of it (if you reach this point) Reformat!!!

Peace and hopefully I have helped you some bit.

CPU's generally work or they don't - if you have thermally damaged it, it just won't work at all any more. Follow Mike Breck's suggestion.

Sound cards like (well some do anyway) irq5. Look in bios and see if you can make the deal.
And what is the wattage of your psu and its make?
60c is livable. The older ath/tbirds are hot runners.

Have you tried going back to 23.11 drivers?
