ok, several issues rolled into 1 here. firstly,
there are 2 computers in my flat mine and robs. rob has win xp pro duron 900 32meg voodoo4500 using dozer1.1 driver and this fix from www.voodoofiles.com (i know it says voodoo 5 but it works and its taken me hours so im not goin 2 question it) "had a tough time with my voodoo 5 5500 after I installed XP, and 2k on two of my boxes. Since, they both had V5 5500's I could not play Jedi Knight, Mohaa, SOF2, etc. So I looked into it, and found that if you install WickedGL, CHANGE the FILENAME of the game you want to play (ex: ~/JediKnightII/jk2sp.ede) to quake3.exe, open WickedGL, scan that directory for Quake3, it will notify you that it has been found, then change the filename back to the original, and BOOM your back to hardcore gaming." back to the spec soundblaster 1024 samsung dvd 256meg pc100 ram 20gig drive i have win xp pro duron 800 32meg gforce 2mx soundblaster5.1 256meg pc 133 abit kt7a m/b sony cdrw samsung dvd think 30gig ibm drive 20gig other drive my first question is foro robs computer, he is using the demo of wicked gl which u have to press c to continue to enter the game(this doesnt bother us) but does the demo expire and will he need to purchase the full version. secondly and the MAIN PROBLEM when he plays dvds or div x. or mp3 with a visulisation, the sound crackles like there is a loose speaker wire. but the crackle is in time with the picture, if u minimise the picture the crackle stops. i have tried removing the sound card and using the onboard sound but this only makes the problem louder (presumably cause its not as good a sound card). spent 12 hours trying to figure this out but im at a loss now. sound and graphics are on different irqs. i have tried lowering the hardware acceleration of 1 both and neither, still as bad as ever. i havent noticed the problem in a game with sound but have only played jedi knight breifly last night and was elated to find it worked so temporarily forgot about the sound problem. i will find out tonight when i get home form work. and the third question is about my computer, after getting jedi outcast to work on robs, i was extremely dissapointed to find it runs much better on his than it does on mine i would of expected mine to run better, what do u think ? im going to update the detonator drivers as i think there not the latest but they are fairly recent and when i try and play jedi with the surround sound enabled it is dreadfully slow. is it comming to that time again for me to put my hand in my pocket and shell out for some new hardware? (maybe i could get a fan and overclock the graphics card a bit. if i remeber correctly it quite easy to do with my card). any replies would be greatly appreciated thanx everyone. |

I bet the sound prob is coming from a VIA chipset mobo and/or a Creative soundcard. These are famous(?) for this kind of activity.
Solution: get rid of VIA and/or Creative cards. Use a Turtle Beach (Sound card) or some other make. What are the settings on opengl for your gf2? Sometimes the makers driver included with a gf2 card is best/fastest. Try it at 16bit color/800x600res/no anisotropic filter/no antialiasing/fast mip-map on/disable v-sync. If you find "stuttering/jerkiness" in game with fast mip-map enabled, turn mip off. If you see"tearing" in game, turn v-synch back on. Make sure your refresh rate is say 72 or faster. Do not go too fast (85 in this case) or you will be asking too much from the cards. You would do well to upgrade the card. GF3's are about costing $130US. I also suspect that your systems would be quite a bit faster with 98SE/ME........ |

it is a creative card and SiS® 735 chipset ecs -K7S5A but i still get the same problem with the onboard sound?? so it cant be the creative card either. any more ideas
thanx for the other suggestions for my computer i'll give them a go when i get home. would it be expected that robs computer would run games better than mine? |

Not really, as the cpus are so close in make, type, and speed.
I feel that one must double the processor speed to see any diff, unless going from one class of cpu to another, say Athlon vs Duron. There is major diff there even at the same speeds. Yours may kick his in the dixalka(pa Rooskii) as you have the pc133 mem. The 735 chipset when it came out was the fastest. Not bad for a pc133 board. Make sure you have disabled the onboard sound every way there is, jumpers, bios screen, etc. 512 megs is good for gaming in XP, any more shows no improvement in speed in tests I have seen. Both of you could use a 1.4 Athlon,(bios notwithstanding) that would give the systems a real kick in the bootay. A Athlon and a gf3(or thereabouts) would take your system into a new level of performance. No matter, have fun with what ya got. Tweak it tune it love it. heh heh Still think you both would be a good deal faster with ME...... |
