what is the difference between a video card and a graphics card

Hello and welcome to the PC Mech forums.

Both mean the same thing. Graphics card or video card, you can say whatever you want.

But there are also "video capture cards". Those cards are different cuz their purpose is to digitalize analog signals. A video card/graphics card creates graphics (and today's chips also include powerful 3d chips) to output it on the monitor.
