Ping Tweak

I am on Dial-up.
I have a reliable ISP.
I have a "Hard" ISA zoom modem.
I consistently connect at 52000bps.
However, I get horrible ping rates on RTCW (400-999 ping) making play nearly impossible. Are there any settings, or tweaks, that I can adjust to improve my ping rates?

Any help would be appreciated. I'm tired of getting shot

Tell the modem to connect at a lower speed for one and see if that helps. Like 48000. This will be very good if you have lots of pl(packet loss). Also, if the game settings in network are set to say, cable, theres your problem. Set it to 56k or 28.8 or whatever modem option there is. If you use faster settings, such as cable/T1/DSL/ISDN you will have horrible ping. You should ping anywhere from 128 to 250 with a good hard modem and a good server to join. I am dialup and ping sometimes 90 but my server is only 5 blocks away. Set a filter to go by ping so you do not even see the pings higher than 250.
Just some things to try.

Well, I am a full-grown adult so I don't think Mom and Dad will flip the DSL bill

I will try forcing my modem to connect at a lower rate and see what happens.

My ISP is only $14.95 a month, that's why I keep it. I plan on getting DSL next year. I've been waiting for the price to go down, but it doesn't look like it will anytime soon.

Thanks for the above mentioned suggestions. If anyone else has any others I'm all ears!

Ok when you said it's $14 a mo I kinda wondered if you have aol. AOL(and the like) will ping at min 400. If you want to play games on a dialup there's no better/faster isp than the closest phone company to your location. Usualy they sell unlimited for $20 or something similar. Worth it. Try it and see.

mike1987: Your posts are very unhelpful - the poster is asking how to improve his ping rates over dialup and all you are doing is pushing broadband, even after the poster hinted that this is not an option. Behavior such as this is unacceptable in these forums and is only giving the impression that you are trying to build your post count.

O'Beachian: The best way to improve pure ping rate over dialup is to lock the modem down to a V.34 connection and forego V.90 for gaming. The extra setting for this depends on what chipset your Zoom uses.

Older Rockwell: +MS=11,1
Newer Rockwell: +MS=V34
Lucent Venus: S38=0

These will limit you to 33.6 or lower - typical speed on a good phone line will be 28.8 or maybe 31.6. Your download speed will be the only thing that's affected negatively but your gaming experience will be better. Here is a site that explains it:
