A friend brought her old compaq to me recently because she was having trouble with it. Whenever she booted up, it would go to desk top and the display would look corrupted and she couldn't boot al the way into the system. She has a Pentium processor in it with 32 megs of ram, onboard video a 2 gig hdd with only 455megs of space left and windows 98 on it.
Well, I booted into safe mode and changed the startup applications to free up memory and try to single out the offending application, if there was one. I got it to boot with no problems, or so I thought. Right in the middle of the screen there is a little yellow line. Whenever a window is dragged over it, it "etches" the window like an old etch a scetch. Has anyone ever seen this before? Before I take it back to her, I would like some serious advice. Is this some sort of virus or just her onboard video going bad. I plugged the monitor up to another computer just to check it and it worked great with no little yellow line.

My guess is either video chip bad or software prob. I would partition and format, in this case if wanted to save the mobo. Also clearing bios may be a good way to start out.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the video driver.

Do also a virus scan. Some viruses make strange things when they got on your PC.

Not the same thing, but I had a client who installed "WinClean"... which was supposed to keep temp files cleared up, get ri of old unattached DLL's, etc... Well, after realizing it was junk, they tried to uninstall it... Bad move... apparently, this program did not like to be uninstalled... Upon bootup, it would get to the desktop, and then a LARGE (I mean HUGE... filling almost the entire screen) Swirly Circle would pop on the screen... and NOT go away... well, after a week or so of tring to figure out what this swirl was, I noticed a box on their shelf for "WinClean"... turns out, the swirl was the logo on the box!!! Well, basically, I had to wipe the system to get rid of that thing. Even though there were no registry entries, nothing in startup, and no files that I could find on teh hard drive, this damn thing would pop up whenever I tried to boot in anything other than Safe Mode.
Talk about crazy... |
