My son was telling me that the game machines like XBox and Play Station have better graffics than any computer that I can build.I have a new build with a trinitron monitor and a Radeon 7500 video card and I think it plays great. The game machines are only 200 bucks but the games are expensive and there is no where near the selection. So are people wasting up to 2500 bucks to build a gaming computer.Like to see some opinions.Thanks.

I believe that the X Box has an nVidia Geforce2 MX graphics card in it.
In this industry what's "good" today will be bettered in 6 mos. I would venture to say that todays GE4 Ti cards will blow the X Box away. |

i agree, have both siting under TV collecting dust. i think the computer can blow both away, its just how much money you want to spend to get the graphics up to par. it can get to be a fun expensive hobby.

And lets not forget the fact that compared to a computer monitor, a TV's resolution is crap.

There's a reason why they are so cheap. Also remember all of the other things you can do with a computer, like sharing music files, other files. Accessing the internet, not to mention how many thousands of times more games, as well as other applications and uses, that there are for computers. Besides, you can't build an XBox yourself, so what's the point? Let's also not forget that you can actually upgrade your PC...

I thought the X-Box used GeForce 3 Graphics, or at least high end GF2? Whatever it is a Radeon 8500 or GF4 Ti series will out-preform it.
But the problem is with a PC, the developers have to assume that there will be some one out there on an old TNT card wanting to play there game. With a console, the developer knows they got a 733MHz CPU, GF3 graphics, 64MB of RAM, 4x DVD-Drive, whatever else(unless they don't have an XBox). In other words, with a console they know what you got and can develope better knowing what you have? Logan

I personally think that both PC's as well as consoles have their uses in different situations.
Sure PC's can do more than just games, but Logan said "you can actually upgrade your PC...", when the fact is sometimes you *need* to upgrade your PC. Not true with consoles, the game makers know the limit of that console so then know exactly how far they can push it. Like Logan said "the developers have to assume that there will be some one out there on an old TNT card wanting to play there game." so there then might be some limitations. Some games just work better with a control bad, just like they sometimes work better with a keyboard. There are some game concepts that work better in a console situation and in a PC situation. Not to mention would doesnt like getting 3 other friends together picking up a 2-4 and a couple bags of Cheetos and have some good 4 player action on the couch all night? Sometimes it's better than playing with them across the 'Net. Also, i hate to see people say how consoles get outdated so fast. A buddy of mine was content with his Super Nintendo up until recently he made the plunge and got a PS1. Who could pass up playing some of the classics on Super Nintendo and the like? Common... Final Fantasy 3/5, Chrono Cross, Legend of Mana, Bomber Man?? |

I have both
![]() Although many times yes, the PC has better graphics, I think the consoles are really catching up... I haven't seen anything on PC that looks as good and run as smoothly as the new Resident Evil on Gamecube.

well, thats because the programmers that make games for xbox and ps2 only have to worry about certain hardware. So they only have to worry about making this game compatible with ONE system.. But computer games have to be compatible with lots of hardware. If a game were made only for an ATI 8500 I'm sure it'd look just as good. By the way what GPU does the Gaemcube use? Like is it similar to the ATI 7500 or 8500?

the gamecube uses a custom version of the ati "flipper" chip running at 202.5 mhz....
for a complete comparison of all three systems here is a link http://www.planetxbox.com/about/compare/ |

FYI, The Xbox has a variant of the GF3 (NV25) graphics chip, not a GF2.
And my take on this topic is that neither the PC or any console has a large jump on the other, graphically. Each are constantly playing catch-up with one another. There is still a great deal of room for improvement in graphics for both the PC and consoles. |

another thing that is to be considered is that console games have one purpose: games.
sure, people build gaming computers, but there are still stuff running in the background, like windows (hehe, i referred to an os like a background application). gaming consoles have a minimal operating system, which allows for resources to be better utilized for game play.

There will never be a console game system that will have better graphics than comp graphics I had an ati 7500 64mb ddr then bought a ti4200 and what a difference in quality and preformance. Alot of times its bragging rights...who has the best. You dont have to spend 2500 to get a good gaming system. Might spend a few dollars on a quality vid card but personally... worth every penny

The nforce mobo's are based on the xbox. Well, the AMD xbox that never was. They run rings around the xbox when paired with a xp cpu and a gf2 or 3. As a plus, you get the sound of the xbox too.

So the console is always going to be playing catch-up with the computer. |
