Usually when playing cs, I would get 80 frames per second, but all of a sudden, I'm now getting 15-30, making the game unplayable.
My system specs: 900mhz AMD Athlon 256mb RAM 32MB 3D Prohpet II MX(uses geforce 2 chip) Sound Blaster PCI 512 Direct X 8.1 I've tried just about everything. The only thing i can think of is maybe Direct X 8.1 is screwing up my frame rate, because I started notice the problem after I updated my direct X to 8.1 from 8.0a. Also, my frame rate has dropped in several other games such as Jedi Outcast, Quake 3, and UT. Please respond if you have any ideas! Thank You |

Download the latest drivers, as well as check your display settings. Make sure you haven't turned on 4x FSAA and anistropic filtering. Those two together, especially the anistropic filtering, will kill the power (what little there is) of the Geforce 2 MX chip. I know, it kills mine. If none of those work, and if you don't have OEM OS, call Microsoft. If you have OEM OS, you'll need to pay some ridiculous amount of money to call them (either $35 or something like $200, either way it's unacceptable). If NOTHING that we can think of works, then I'd say sorry, but reformat. Hope it can help

Unfortunately, the only way to get rid of DX 8.1 is reinstalling Windows...

I used a program to uninstall DirectX 8.1, but i still have the same problem. So, I went into the DXDIAG and looked under the Direct X files tab and noticed that 8 or 9 files were directX 8.1 files. So I then moved all the directX8.1 files to a new folder and unintalled the DirectX8.0a version and reinstalled it. This time when i went into the DX files in DXdiag, there were no DX8.1 files, but i still have the same low fps problem. Should just delete all the DirectX files manually and do a fresh install of DX8.0a since I still have the same problem?

What was the program you used to uninstall DX 8.1? I could really have use for it.
And could you explain how did you get rid of the files manually? Where should I look for those DX files? TIA |

I dont remeber where i got it from, but i can email u it.(file is 122kb's zipped up).
When you say how did i get rid of the files manually, do you mean the 8 or 9 files that were still there even after having 8.0a or do you mean how i was going to go delete all the Direct X files manually? Just to remind you, It didn't solve my problem. |

I meant the files that the program didn't remove.

Before trying this, I must say "Try at your own risk". Just because it didn't screw up my comp doesn't mean it won't screw up yours.
Here's how I did manual uninstalle of Direct X 8.1 files: I went into the Direct X Diagnostic tool and clicked on the DirectX files tab. From there I scrolled down the list looking at the version part of the list. Any of the files that had .0881 for the last 4 digits of the version number, I assumed they were Direct X 8.1 files, so I wrote down each of the file names. I searched for the files using the find program in the start menu. They were usually in the windows system or system32 folder. I suggest that you remove the files into a folder just in case you need to put them back. After I put each file in the back up folder, I used the program to uninstall DirectX 8.0a and I reinstalled DirectX 8.0a. |

OK. Thanks.
Right now I have DX 8.0a, but eventually I'll have to install 8.1, and this info will be useful if it gives me trouble. |

Nuke, when you say "reinstall windows," do you mean reformat or just a simple reinstall?
