DIRECT X question

I am currently using DirectX7 drivers that I upgraded from the original DirectX6 when I built my PC. My question is would gaming be enhanced if I went to DirectX8? One game I used to play allot Thief II wanted DirectX6, ONLY. Is there a way that old games and newer games can function reliably with the most current version of DirectX?

I have DX8.1 and run Thief II just fine. I've never had a problem with having a higher DX version than was required.

OK, Hal, I appreciate your response. I'll try it. Are there any issues that might contribute to my Theif II not wanting to run without Dx6 that are component specific? Vid card?

Have you tried running Theif II with DX8? I can't see why it should be so specific to DX6.

The only game I saw that always tried to install DX 3.0 even when 5.0 was already installed was Dark Reign.

I've got plenty of games that want to install DX3/4/5/6/7 by default as part of the installation. I just hit cancel at that point.

Was told that DX7 was very buggy and cause a lot of games problem. Either stay with DX6 or go DX7.1 onwards
