Question DVD from DVD-ROM Drive to TV

Building a new computer for my fiancee with a VGA PNY Geforce4 Ti4200, that has a TV out on it, which I believe is an S-Video hookup. The TV is in a different room from where her computer will be.

My first question is how long can the S-Video cable be? Does shorter make a difference?

My second question is, how will the sound work? Do I run audio in/out cables from the sound card to my receiver or is the sound transfered along with the DVD recording?

I mostly use my computer for blasting things and writing the occassional word or excel document, so I am total noob at this kind of stuff. Any pointers would be appreciated.

Components:
MSI nForce K7N415 Pro
AMD XP 1800
512 MB Corsair DDR2100
On board sound
Toshiba 16X DVD-ROM
VGA PNY Geforce4 Ti4200 64MB DDR
Windows XP Pro

Thanks,

Hi,

on www.tvtool.com you'll find good information about this stuff.

Length does matter (I don't know the actual numbers, though), and audio is extra. The s-video cable only transferres the video.

Radio Shack makes a neat little gadget that is wireless and will transmit your audio and video from your computers output to the TV's input getting rid of the problem of long cable runs. I went with an ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon 7500 so I could have RF remote to be able to control the DVD from a different room.

Greetings,

That site does have some decent info on it, thanks for the link RJ.

For this kind of stuff, I would normally have gone the ATI All-in-Wonder route, but the TV OUT capabilities were sort of the by product of going for a DVI OUT so that the videocard would have a totally digital connection with a LCD Display. The TV OUT wasn't really in the initial plan.

That Radio Shack Gizmo sounds pretty slick, HAL. I might have to check that out.

Thanks gentlemen,
