Unhappy Problem installing Counterstrike

I have just formatted and reinstalled everything on my compy, apart from Counterstrike.
Every time I try to install it, it gets to a certain point, downloading maps/De_cbble and then it gives an I/O error every single time.
This happens with every single copy of CS I have, from 1.3 through to 1.5.
I have even downloaded 1.5 again, and borrowed a known good copy from a friend, and every time it gives the error at exactly the same place.

What can be causing this, as it never happened to me the first time I installed it........

System
Pentium 3 700mhz
256mb generic pc100 sdram (2 sticks of 128)
Seagate 20gig Harddrive
Nvidia Geforce 2 mx400 32mb AGP
Shuttle Spacewalker AV61 motherboard

Is this a new system, or did you just format your existing one?

Is it the full version of CS or the add-on for HalfLife ?

On the full version there are some maps missing, so you can't play them unless you install.

If it's the add-on for HalfLife then you shouldn't get a problem. Make sure you have the newest HalfLife Update intalled.

My system is existing, just reformatted to clear out a load of junk and to try and quicken things up........

I have Halflife updated to 1110 which is the current file, and have copies of 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 mod versions - I don't use the retail version.

I can't understand why every version gives the same I/O error at exactly the same place..........
I'm starting to think that there may be a hardware problem somewhere........

What version of Windows? Have you installed any of the Via 4 in 1 drivers?

UPDATE

I have found out that my harddrive wasn't being reported properly in BIOS, so I've reset it, and can now install and play CS.

A couple of maps differ from server, but at least I can play most of them.

Thanks for your time and effort guys!!

Interesting! If you come back to read this, were any of your other proggies doing weird stuff. I would think if htat was the case, something else would get screwy too!

Come to think of it, ICQ kind of got screwy now and again, Redshift 4 would never keep my settings for more than a month or so, which I just thought was part of the program.

Most programs seemed to run okay though.

I used to get those errors having maps differing from the servers. Well I'd delete the map file, it would download the new one and it still wouldn't work on a different server... CS has always been screwy like that.

So how is C-S these days? I stopped playing when it went gold due to the nerfing of the game to help the noobs not get slaughtered. I go back to it about once a year to remind myself why I don't play. Ever since they gaffed up the guns accuracy and damage at B5.2 and above, I lost interest. Got tired of having to re-learn how to play with every new beta. When it hit the shelves, I deleted it knowing full well the kind of crowd it would draw.

I heard C-S kicked in the Valve Anti-Cheat? How is that working out? Is it effective?

I've migrated over DoD since it's weapons make a bit more sense, though they always need to tweak them to keep them balanced. NOw with B3.0 nearing, if not already here, the new paratroopers should be a lot of fun.

Being in a clan, and a server admin, I can say that Valve anti cheat is working well.
Luckily we don't get the type of player that is a complete idiot, and we have a good set of players that we seem to get on the server.

As for tweaks, everyone moans about relearning how to play, but in all they've rewritten the code to benefit hpbs. N00bs still don't stand a chance on the right server, and weapons seem to be okay, apart from the AWP (still)
