system freezes during jkii

whenever I play jedi knight ii my compouter freezes or reboots itself. I have no idea why this is happening, I bouthg my computer a year ago and I'm going to build a new one but I want to make sure I don't make the saame mistake. I think that the problem is the amd processor overheating, could that be it? Ive heard the the amd processors overheat a lot compared to intel p4s. If that's the case I don't want an amd because I don't want my computer to freeze. Can anyone tell me what's wrong?

What kind of computer do you have? Built or brand? If you can give us the specs we would be able to provide better help.

Anyway, does it only freeze in this particular game? How much time can you play before it freezes? Have you tried other FPS or intensive 3D games? Do they make the computer freeze too?

Yes Intel CPUs run cooler than AMDs but with the proper ventilation AMDs have no prob. I have an AMD and I've never had overheating problems. What temps are you getting?

Have you cleaned your computer lately?
Have you patched the game?

Looking forward to your reply.

well, this is an hp computer, bought from best buy. Its got a 1 gighz amd processor. I dont know much about the other parts. the computer freezes about every 20 minutes in the game, someimes only 5 minutes. It freezes in all games i play that are intense fps's like unreal tournament. In that I can play more like an hour or two before it freezes. What do you mean "cleaned"? I haven't touched the inside since I had it. I have a gf2 gts pro 64 meg graphics card. Thanks.

By cleaning I mean opening the PC case and blowing all the dust out, as excesive dust will rise the temps and it can even stop the fans, which is a very bad thing. Do you know how many fans does it have installed? You should check the CPU and vid card fans to see if they are still working.

Has this problem started lately or has it been there since you bought the machine?

OK, clean the dust with compressed air and try to run the games without the case cover and see what happens. (Be sure to ground yourself before doing this and unplug the PC from the power).

Compressed air is air that comes in a can. It can be shot out at a high speed, which blows the dust away. You can get them at most office stores. If you live in the US, heres a link to compressed air at Offfice Max.

Yes, touching metal with both hands like your case will ground you.

Go into the BIOS and see if there is a section that gives you the CPU and mobo temps.

If there is, leave the PC running in the BIOS for about 30mins (with the cover on) and come back and tell us what the temps are.

If not, download and install Motherboard Monitor 5. If there are sensors on the mobo, then this program should be able to use them and tell you what your temps are.

When your computer first boots up, and you see the black screen with the white information, hit the DELETE key. That should allow you to access the BIOS.

In HPs it could be different. If you have the manual then look for BIOS and it will tell you which key to press. If you don't you can try with F1 or F10, if pressing DEL don't bring the BIOS up.

yes i have hp and f10 brings up the bios but with hp the options you have are different you dont get the kind of options you get with the home builds no temp readings things like that.
