Voodoo 2 not working

My friend has a voodoo 2 graphics card installed on a compaq 4860 with integrated video, he's running xp and they got a 3rd party beta xp driver, but the card doesn't work, only the onboard works. The voodoo card just displays some purple dots. Any input?

Are you talking a Voodoo2 video card, or add in accelerator. If it's an add in, you need the loopback cable connected from the onboard video to the input on the voodoo, then the monitor connected to the voodoo card.

question for Hal: If its a regular Voodoo2 card, should he somehow disable the Onboard video?

question for mattg2k4: Has this system been set up like this for a while and just started going bonkers? Or did you experience the problem after attempts to connect the Voodoo card (assuming it is a normal card)

I deleted computer and installed xp and then it didn't work because my friend has the software. but i got the software off internet and installed it and it won't run through the voodoo card, only through the onboard.

Well, I suppose that answers the above questions.

So it is a normal Voodoo2 card. It sounds to me like you need to disable entirely the onboard video, so your Voodoo2 can go to default. I am not experienced in onboard video, but once it is out of the way, just TURN OFF THE CDOMPUTER (after defaulting to standard VGA), install the Voodoo card, turn on the computer and install the drivers, restart again. Then your Voodoo card should be your Primary display.

(side note* you aren't unplugging the monitor while the system is running are you? Very bad idea. Don't plug/unplug anything but USB while the system is on)

Yes, if this is just a regular video card, then the onboad video should be disabled (if the system allows this).

mattg2k4, in one way, this sounds like an stand alone vid card, in another way, it sounds like an add in accellerator. What connections are on the back of this Voodoo?

DilLy, yes I unplugged the monitor while the comp was on, because to get to windows and start Diablo, I have to use the onboard, then switch to the voodoo. How bad is it to hot swap a monitor?

Hal, the connections it has on the back of the card are a male and a female monitor jack, nothing else.

I don't have a clue how to disable the onboard video because this is a compaq, in other words, no real documentation for that kind of thing. I also know that compaq bios setup programs are usually very limited, and as this is not my computer, I'm not familiar with the bios, but I'll check it.

OK, that's an add-in accellerator. Do you have the loopback cable that goes from the existing onboard video back to the input on the Voodoo card?

You don't need to disable the onboard video, the voodoo helps the onboard during 3D games. You should have a cable from the onboard to the voodoo, then the monitor plugged into the voodoo for everything to work right.

So what you mean is take to monitor output plug from the onboard video and connect it into the male monitor jack on the voodoo and that should do it?

Just curious Hal, does that give it full Voodoo2 functionality and "speed" (i use that term loosely )

That's the way those cards work... I have two of them in my smaller machine at home. It connects the same way, but there is a ribbon cable that connects the two cards internally. While it is getting to be pretty old tech, the dual Voodoo2's combined with my 8Mb All-in-Wonder still do a decent job of playing Quake III, Unreal, and Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

LOL... it's the one that my wife refers to as the junk machine because it's built entirely of leftovers from upgrades to my machine.
