Flight Simulators

Hey all,
I been planning on getting Microsoft Flight Simulator, and the problem I have is the version I should get. Soo, which one is best : 98, 2000, Std 2002, or 2002 Pro? Are the new ones laggy? How much memory would I need? I am running a 1.6 Northwood, with a Radeon 7000 (64 DDR) and 128 of 800 RDRAM. Thanks.

Heres a link to Microsofts website for the games. You can see the features of the Std compared to the Professional. http://www.microsoft.com/games/fs2002/features.asp

These are the requirements for FS 2002.

Microsoft Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 2000, or Windows XP operating system (Does not support Windows NT).
Multimedia PC with Pentium II 300Mhz equivalent or higher processor with 8MB 3D video hardware acceleration or better.
Super VGA monitor supporting 800x600 resolutions in 16 bit color.
DirectX 8.0a API or later
DirectX8.0a or later compatible 8 MB video card
DirectX8.0a API compatible sound card with speakers or headphones
Sound card with speakers or headphones required for audio.
Approximately 650 MB of available hard disk space; additional 100MB for swap file.
Quad Speed or better CD-ROM drive
64 MB of memory
Joystick or flight yoke (recommended).
Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

You shouldnt have any problems running it with your system.

I have FS2000 but I never really played it so I cant really give you a testimonial.

I have read a lot about those games, and if you have the power, get the latest release. It looks incredible.

Well I played the first Flight Simulator from Microsoft that ever came out, and half the time you were wondering where the runway was. Or was the huge box was...jeez, no boats, no cars, but still it was excellent for its time.

http://fs2002.sphosting.com/screenshots.html I just wonder if I have the power, as I really would like to get the latest one, I just don't want to be like the DSL guy in Half Life over the Dial-Up. The Dial Up hops into the air, and freezes there. DSL comes up behind and blows him away.

I have FS2002 (non-pro ed.) and it runs fine on my system. HOWEVER, MSFS2002 and my sound card (TBSC) have a known conflict. You have to use the lowest sound quality and still you may experience a BSOD.

I also have X-plane. X-Plane's graphics are better and smoother, but you don't have any speech contact with ATC unless you download and install Microsoft Voice (pretty large file).

I tried X-Plane, the demo that is, but the controls are rather difficult (but then I need a new joystick) but still $60.00 is better then $100.00. Especially when they are both about the same.

Personally I don't like M$ FS anymore. The last version that I bought was FS98. A friend of mine got FS2000, and i installed it on my PC to see how it runs: Pathetically slow, and the displays are bad. They made it too photo realistic and thus impractical. To run it smooth I had to lower the graphics so much that I had no improve over FS98. So FS2000 = no.
At CeBIT I've seen FS2002, and it was smooth. I wasn't able to fly much but I liked it better than FS2000. But well, again, I haven't seen much about it, only the Cessna, which was ok.

So FS98 and FS2002 could be ok for you. FS 98 would be no problem, with FS2002 I'm not sure. But maybe there are other (better) simulation programs out there. Haven't tried X-Plane.

www.x-plane.com I wish I could try demos or trials of most of the games (I generally do with most software, see if I like it or not) But I can't with FS

X-Plane 6.xx

I see X-Plane has a new version out. Has anyone tried 6.xx? I'm interested in the changes. The ONLY downfall X-Plane 5.xx had was the lack of details on buildings and structures. Has this been fixed?

Hmmm...Where's my credit card???

Not really, for instance I was trying to jockey the plane back up into the sky and I was just touching ground, kept hitting all these cars, and houses...funny thing was the cars kept on going.

cars?! houses?! Well, that IS an improvement from ver. 5.xx as all it had were rectangular buildings, and one kind of tree.

Still a little leary of shelling out $100.00 for it.

I've got MS Combat Flight Sim. I'd be happy to machine gun some of you out of the sky! Just say when.

Here we see Lt. Blakhart as he pilots his P51-D over Belgium in search of prey..... He sees Herr Tiretool in his infamous FW190.
