How fast of a processor do i need to be able to game good?
I am looking at getting an AMD XP17 1.47 processor. Is that good enough? How long before that will be to slow for the new games?

I'm running at 1.53 ghz right now and it's still extremely fast for gaming. CPU makers come out with faster processors faster than game makers can come out with new games. XP1700 should last you quite a long time. Also you can always easily upgrade that CPU since the socket doesn't change.

Anything above 1GHz is plenty in my opinion, games are all more dependant on the graphics card.

Dr. Z is right, you could have the XP 1700+ and a crappy video card and not be pleased at all with the gaming. On the other hand, you can have a slower processor (like a 1.2Ghz Thunderbird for example...) and still be very pleased with your gaming with a GREAT video card.
What video card are you using or planning to use? I have the 1800+ and it ROCKS. Good Luck,

I haven't seen any games lately that recommend more than 700Mhz processing speed. A good GeF 4 Ti card will take care of your gaming needs (at least until next year
)I believe a 1.47Ghz processor will keep you gaming for at least 2-3 years. |

It totally depends on the game producer. Blizzard just released Warcraft III, which has incredibly good graphics in my opinion. It only requires a 400MHz Pentium II or equivalent (with a 32MB 3D accelerator, which you should have). But something that is really unoptimized, produced by a low quality company, will require something much more powerful. However, anything 3D will be much more reliant on your video card, so instead of wasting money on a faster processor, just get a better video card or a Western Digital hard drive with 8MB cache instead of 2MB. The CPU is the "central" part, but not the most pivotal at the moment.
