Who makes the best TI 4200?
Who makes the best GeForce 4 TI 4200 for under $170? I was looking on newegg and they have similar prices. Also, is the 64mb version really faster than the 128mb version? The box of the PNY says it is. It doesn't really matter to me about overclockability, just whoever is fastest out of the box. Also, the price doesn't have to come from newegg
![]() Thanks a lot! Right now I have a mad dog 64mb prowler (the NOT ati one) and warcraft 3 is really dark on default gamma settings. I have to turn up gamma to see, which washes out color and sucks. It is a cheap card, $40 by rebate, but I don't recommend it. |

MSI, ASUS, or Gainward.
I think its a three way tie between those, for quality. |

I'd go with 128MB and My Gainward has been terrific.
Good Luck,

Help me understand video cards
Ok, I admit software issues are my speciality. I am ashamed to admit I thought all GeForce cards were made by nVidia. Isn't that where we get the drivers from? I've had 3 computers with nVidia GeForce cards and I just assumed they were made by nVidia. Their website, nVidia.com says they make them. In my device manager, my display adapter says "NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX/MX 400." If nVidia didn't make my card, how do I find out who did? I did see one at Best Buy once and it said Visiontek on the box. So, how can so many companies make the same brand of video card, and aren't they all built to the same specs? Please enlighten me gently.
Thanks,

The Geforce line of video cards are created by NVIDIA. NVIDIA doesnt actually manufacture all the cards, box them and ship them to stores. NVIDIA designs the GPU (graphic processing unit) and allows companies like Visiontek, Asus, Abit, Gainward, PNY, etc to actually create the video card in a factory.
Because NVIDIA designed the chip on your video card, you see the NVIDIA (model of card) in your Device Manager. The different companies make the cards to the same specs according the model they what. So when Visiontek decides to make some Geforce 3 Ti 200s, and PNY wants to make some Geforce 3 Ti 200s, a card from either company will run exactly the same. The only way to find who makes your card is look at the model number on the card itself. Then go to www.google.com and search for it. Youll be able to see which company made the card. HTH Davidoo1.

I have a Leadtek WinFast which works well. I don't know where it stands among the others. I think if you just get a good name brand that the cards will perform similary since they are all based on the same design. Pay attention to the input's and output's that are on the card and evaluate your needs for them. You also want to look at the software and cables that are included. Some include games and WinDVD if you want them.

The Ti4200's have faster mem on the 64mb version than the 128mb one. I recall one compmany put the faster mem on the 128mb version. Anybody know which? I would suggest that.

Yeah, why would a card company want to compromise? I mean you pay the full amount for a ti4600 and the memory is slower!? Thats rediculous, but not very noticable. I still went with it.

Texuspete00: The GF4 Ti4200 64MB version's memory runs at 500MHz while the 128MB version runs at 444MHz. Not sure which 128MB card runs at 500MHz, but I know the MSI one is a good overclocker with fast memory.

Thanks for the link Lord Prism, looks like there are no 128MB 4200 cards with 513MHz memory speeds.

Texuspete00,
The ASUS V8420 GeForce4 Ti 4200 DELUXE has 128MB DDR and 3.3ns memory. This is the DELUXE version not the TD version. Unfortunately it is not sold in the States for some reason. I have looked all over the place for this card and the only sources I can find are some in Australia and Germany. Last edited by Guardian; 08-09-2002 at 09:55 AM. |
