I plan to build a system and i was wondering what vid card i should get.
I'm planning to use the card to watch large amount of DVDs and play a moderate amount of games. I plan to use many windows applications a lot too. I'm willing to pay up to $200US (but its okay if the board is a couple $ over) I was looking at the geforce4 TI 4200, then ATI 9000, and ATI 8500DV cards. but i am not sure. pls. suggest

I'd wait a little while til the newer ATI cards come out... then get the 8500 since the prices will most likely drop... it's a good gamer and should handle your dvd playing quite well... make sure you have good quality cooling and power supply also...
Good luck Sean... |

I agree, I would wait until the prices on the ATI Radeon 8500 come down a bit, it's perfect for gaming and DVDs.

The geforce 4 ti4200 is a remarkable card for the money.

I'm not fully up to speed on my nVidia's, but I do believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that their DVD support is only hardware assisted where as the ATI's have true hardware DVD decoding. Since DVD's are your primary concern, I would go with the ATI and they will game just as fine to boot.

I am for ATI also, I ditched all of my NVidia cards a longtime back. Great cards, high quality, great software, and full screen DVD with no problems. I also play Return to Wolfenstein, MOHAA, and Nascar 2002 with absoulutly zero problems on an ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder 32MB.

And finally the hopes of better driver support. ATI has developed their Catalyst Suite series of drivers that promises 8 to 10 updates per year which is probably on par with nVidia. Time will tell if these updates come that often, but they've had 2 in 2 months already.

My geforce 4 has had zero problems with dvd. I just recently bought a dvdrom and all is well. Lord of the Rings looks awesome on it. The one thing that I really love about nvidia cards geforce 3 and above is digital vibrance. When you turn it on, the colors just come alive.

Not saying that the GF cards will have probs with DVD playback, they shouldn't at the speeds things run these days. I just tend to stay with the philosophy that hardware is better than software or hardware/software decoding.

That is true. My main graphic needs are fps. Frames Per second. Woohoo. I do like the way the 9700 looks, but Can't wait 'til november, though.
