ATI Radeon or Geforce 4?
What card do you folks prefer? I'm not sure which one I like so Im looking for some insight.
Also, what is a good brand to buy the Geforce 4 from? I was looking at Gainword, MSI, and a few of those guys. Thanks |

Hi yank918,
My personal preference is for ATI, either the Radeon 8500 or the 9700 which kicks GF4 butt. Those are both good nVidia card brands, I personally like Visiontek and Abit, but MSI cards overclock well. |

does the radeon 8500 compare to the Geforce 4200? Is it slower or faster?

It competes with the 4200/4400. You can see how the cards stack up here:

Not to mention Radeon is cheaper. On the chart is says that the Radeon BBA 64mb is fast than the BBA LE 128mb. Why is this?

The Radeon 8500 has 64MB and runs at 275MHz while the Radeon 8500LE has 128MB but only runs at 250MHz.

Thank you DrZaius. The imput was helpful. I am considering the $165 275 mhz ATI RADEON 8500 128MB DDR RETAIL from Newegg. Sound like a good deal.

I would look at the LE version too, you can overclock the card to normal 8500 speeds and take advantage of the extra 64MB of memory.

I just bought the hercules version of the 8500 128mb from newegg for $134. they had it at $129, but when I went back a couple hours later it was already up $5. either way, that is cheap! have it now and I love it. plan on using the tv out some day too.

I love my 8500LE! I use the TV out to watch DVDs and I plan on getting the 9700, but only after the price has dropped of course I may have to wait awhile.

Hi Yank 918, I had a similar problem to you and have done a bit of research. Here is what I've found out- but I think it comes down to personal preference:
GF4 Ti4600 is currently the fastest VPU available, the Radeon 8500 struggles to compete with the GF4 Ti4200 BUT There is a new Radeon 9700 supposed to be in shops mid August, which is supposedly over 50% faster than the GF4 at high resolutions. This card will likely be priced slightly more expensive than current GF4s on the market- about the same as the GF4 when first released. (RRP was put at $399, but some people here have said that it will probably be lower than this at newegg) I the past, every new Radeon has been outclassed by Nvidia- either with a driver update (although even the best driver update will noit account for the difference in this case) or a new chip. The new Geforce 5, will likely be a bit faster, but probably wont make it into the shops 'till the new year. It is worth mentioning that Nvidia's driver support has in the past been much better than Ati's. Myself, I decided to hold on and wait for the new radeon, hope this is of use

Considering all the money that's being spent on new graphic's cards, it a pity we're not getting some good games to try them on.
From a FPS fan perspective, it has been "slim pickins" since MOHAA and RTCW. Also, I don't know about the US, but in Scotland the PC Games section of most stores is being "squeezed" smaller all the time by console games. They just don't have the range of PC Games they used to have. That's a pity...especially for the smaller PC games developers. |

I have a GeForce2 GTS and a Radeon AIW,
The GF runs games awesome, and the radeon does tv captures and can play most games. I figure it's time to retire the old GF2, and I am really considering the Radeon 9700 over the GF4-4600. I can't wait for some reviews..... |

I was considering the Abit Siluro GeForce4 Ti4200 128M over the Radeon 8500 for gaming reasons and the driver support, what do you guys think, its only a dollar more at googlegear

Either card will perform well with games, some people like nVidia for their driver support (I havn't had any driver problems with ATI by the way, they've really improved), and some like ATI for their great 2D quality.

I just traded my ATI Radeon for a Xtasy GeForce4 4200. I really like the change. Especially during games.

ATI's implementation of anistropic filtering, which makes textures further away look much better, is much better than nVidia's implementation. With a Radeon 8500 you can turn it up to 16x anistropic filtering with something like a 5% FPS drop, while nVidia's is MUCH higher, even on the Geforce 4 Ti 4600.
Many claim that ATI has better image quality, which I hope is true since I plan on buying an ATI OEM Radeon 8500. The new Radeon 9700 gets over twice the scores the GF4 Ti 4600 gets on 3D Mark 2001, and the Radeon 9700 is running some of its earliest drivers. The Radeon 8500 can compete with the GF4 TI 4200, but past that it is going to lose. I like DrZaius idea, which is to buy the Radeon 8500 LE 128MB, and overclock it to Radeon 8500 specs.

Alternatively you could buy a GF4 Ti4200 or Ti4400 and overclock to near Ti4600 specs.
It all seems to come down to personal preference |

but what about all the cooling?!
i have a radeon 7000 - it's low end but slower than an MX400 - the driver support has improved by a long shot - i am not sure that the driver issues are a reason to steer clear of ATI anymore. |
