ATI Drivers?

I am having a problem my system will freeze or lock up. I have to reboot and some microsoft deal will come up saying there was a unexpected shutdown. Display drivers for Radeon 8500 seem responsible. This has started since I updated to the latest driver from ATI. What could be causing the lockup?

Hi Cwilde65,

Try uninstalling the drivers (from Add/Remove programs) and set the driver to Standard VGA, then reinstall the latest drivers. Problems sometimes occur when you install the newer Catalyst drivers over older ones.

When you downloaded the drivers did you read the installation notes? According to Hal there are some things that you must do with the newest drivers. This was from Hal's Post

1) Uninstall your previous video drivers prior to installing these ones
2) If you have the multimedia center 7.6, don't uninstall it. The one on the web site is an upgrade and the previous version must be installed.
3) Same applies for remote wonder users, version 1.1 must be previously installed.

Thanks for the replies.
I followed the instructions and uninstalled the old drivers the first time like it said but it gave me the problems. Know i went back and unistalled and reinstalled again and it seems to be workin fine. Its funny how sometimes it takes several times to get something to work.

Glad you got it, I have found with ATI that it is sometime best to install only the driver, using the Windows Hardware Found, the first time around and then installing the other stuff using the easy install. On the other hand I have had problems if I installed from the CD-Rom and when I got notification of a newer file being overwritten, if I kept the newer file.
