Benchmarking my video card... what commands to use in Quake 3?
I'm just about to get a new video card and I wanted to compare the one I have now and the new one. I know that there is a command that you need to enter in the console during one of the demos for it to give you a FPS rating at the end. Can anyone tell me what it is?

Hi E-L-M,
Type timedemo 1 in the console and then play a demo, at the end it will tell you the average FPS. You can also compare the cards by running 3D Mark 2001. http://www.madonion.com/products/3dmark2001/ |

Hmmmm.... Quake 3 didn't prove to be too difficult for the card. Can I use RTCW to benchmark? My monitor only supports 1024 X 768 so I need a more complexe game. I'll dl 3D Mark soon. Its 40 megs and that will take a while on my 56k line.

Yep, you can run RTCW, its based on the Q3A engine so the commands are the same, just do timedemo 1 and run a demo.

only problem is there doesn't seem to be any demos with RTCW. I suppose I'll have to download one?

Yeah, or you can just record one of yourself playing online for a few minutes.

First, start a game and type g_syncronousClients 1 in the console, then type record demo1 (where demo1 is the name of the demo), and play around for a while. When you're done, just type stoprecord and the new demo should be in the demos folder.

Just run the timedemo 1 command and then demo demo1 will play back the recorded demo and display the FPS at the end as before.

Sorry, I havn't played Q3A/RTCW in a while so I don't remember the exact commands. Give Q3Bench a try, it takes care of the commands.
