Hi.
Can anyone tell me if you can play playstation 1 or 2, games on a PC? I remember reading that there was software out that allows you to do this. But does it really work? thanks |

You can play PS1 but its very glitchy, only certain games work... not worth it, besides the sound codecs are really not up to par... cant enjoy the awesome soundtrack of FFT!

There are emulators you can get for PS1 and PS2. I've never tested a PS2 emulator (since I don't have any PS2 games), but the PS1 emulator (Bleem) has poor compatibility with most games. So in a way, console games were ment to be played on consoles.

Emulators and ROMs are considered illegal if you do not already own the game, and if you don't you can only legally keep them for 24 hours. Past that, it is illegal, and being illegal it is neither discussed nor supported by PC Mech forums. It is in the rules, just a heads up... not that I don't have a few ROMs for some really old games

Hmm I thought emulators were legal, hence Bleem!'s victory over Sony in court.

They are legal, if you already own the game or if you only keep the ROM on your hard drive for 24 hours.

God can't anyone ask a question here without someone somehow "moving" the subject to the illegal side of thing's? Not one thing the thread starter said was about anything illegal, just that he wanted to play PS1 or PS2 games on a PC. And there is legal software to do this, no biggie really....

As far as the techincal specs...
Playstation 1 games were regular CD ROMs, pretty simple to get to work (excusing the fact that there aren't many well-supported emulators). Sony was a stickler about free distribution of the Playstation BIOS, which is required to get any game to work, however. If you have a Playstation, of course, you can get at it. Playstation 2 games on the other hand use a proprietary CD, similar to a DVD in format, so to my knowledge they're not gonna work in any standard computer CD or DVD drive even if there were an emulator that could play them. Emulators are not inherently illegal. Under Fair Use decisions in the US you are perfectly justified in backing up copyrighted material that you've paid for the right to use. For instance, the Atari 2600 isn't made, repaired, or supported anymore, but if you have one there's nothing wrong with you having an emulator to play your old 2600 games with. For the purposes of our forums... You can talk about emulators, you can talk about ROMs to the extent of whether one exists or not. You CAN'T talk about where to download ROMs, you CAN'T offer to send someone ROMs openly on the forum or ask for ROMs to be sent to you, and you CAN'T talk about how to get a downloaded ROM to work. The only exception to this is stuff that's considered "abandonware", i.e. software that's no longer sold and/or the company that made said software is now defunct. Those are questionable, but either way don't really apply to discussion threads that often. You're more than welcome to email each other to discuss whatever you like, but there's a limit to what you can do here in public. Bottom line, I like older video games, and have emulators/roms for many of the old games that I played and owned when I was a kid as do other mods on this forum. No one wants to completely restrict you guys from talking about emulators, if you can keep your conversations within the bounds of good judgement. So there .

An emulator is the program that allows you to play ROMs on you computer. A ROM is the version of the game that is made for the PC.

I used VGS to play a few of my PS1 games, and they all worked flawlessly.
Simply, an emulator is a PROGRAM used to run a ROM. A ROM is a console game converted to PC, and is usually (always?) a single FILE. |
