This should answer your questions: http://www.divx.com/support/what.php
I had it for about a week but I thought it was pretty unnecessary when I already have Real Player, Quicktime, and Window Media Player. HTH

DivX is just another AVI codec. If you have an AVI that is encoded with DivX, you need that codec so that the divx avi can be played back.
DivX is a high-compression codec and is often used for clips that you can download from the web (to keep the download time as short as possible). RJ

Divx is a great compression codec. It can take an 9 GB DVD and turn it into a 700 MB AVI file. Comparatively, it is the mp3 of video, though not quite as contriversial.
