Geforce 4 + DX 8 issues....

I recently installed a Gianward Geforce 4 ti 42000 (64MB) into my Dell. I installed it correctly, and the card appears to work fine in all Direct x 7 games, But Direct x 8 games refuse to run, and if I run DXDiag, my card fails the D 3d 8 test, saying D3D8 Test Result: Failure at step 5 (GetDeviceCaps): HRESULT = 0x8876086a (3D not available)

Specs are as follows:
P4 1.7 Gz
256 MB RAM
GeForce ti 4200 64MB
Windows XP
Soundblaster Live!

My DXdiag file is avalible upon request, If you think that may help anyone make sense of this...

I have E-mailed Gainward and Dell about this, but have recieved no reply as yet.

I appreciate any help I can get
-thx
