GeForce5

Anyone know when the Geforce 5 is coming out? I'm interested in maybe picking one up or a g4 ti 4600 when the G5's come out assuming it drops other prices and whatnot. I'm desperately lookin to upgrade because if you see my current video card (see below >_<) It's not that bad but, I'm turning into a perfectionist with my PC and I really don't want to - costs too much.

BTW:
I'm a pretty casual to moderate gamer, looking at my system below, how long do you think it iwll be before it will be pretty poor? (I'm upgrading my vid card and adding a second HD soon)

Hi Fuze,

There won't be a GeForce5, they're going to use another name. The current chipset name is "NV30" and it's set to be out in November. I would go with the Radeon 9700 instead since its the fastest card available and it will be available a lot sooner.

the 9700 supposed to be out sept 9th. but to run this card you will need at least a 300 watt power supply. plus an extra internal power supply.

this card needs a 12 volt plug in just like your "cd rom or hard drive". so if you have alot of stuff already in your system this cards going to take some, thats why you need the bigger power supply.
here's a link to the card: http://www.ati.com/vortal/rv300/flash/index.html

Is the radeon 9700 supposed to be better than the current G4's?

I believe so! Thats hot but the launch price's gonna be steep, around the same as GE4's launch price was I heard... But I'm hoping with its launch, the GE4's will drop

The launch price is MSRP $399 US. The Radeon 9000 Pro is outperformed by the Radeon 8500 in nearly every benchmark. If you want a new ATI card, and are not going for the Radeon 9700, then buy an OEM Radeon 8500 LE 128MB and overclock it to Radeon 8500 specs. It'll cost like $110 plus shipping.

In current benchmarks from Tomshardware and Anandtech the Radeon 9700 scores from 50% to 100% higher on benchmarks than the Geforce 4 Ti 4600. It especially kills it in anti-aliasing and anistropic filtering tests. It does not require the power connect that a CD-ROM does, but the one for a floppy drive. You know, the smaller one. As always, ATI cards produce much less heat than nVidia cards, so it will be cooler and quieter than a Geforce 4 Ti 4600.

You won't need a really big power supply, just a high quality one. I've read of people running two hard drives, two CD drives, plus fully loaded with a high end processor, high end video card plus nearly all PCI slots filled. If you have a 300 watt Antec, Sparkle, Enermax or Enlight power supply you'll be fine. If you have a 450 watt Deer or Austin, and it hasn't already blown up, it won't be fine. The same goes for stereo systems, it isn't the wattage necessarily, but the quality of the power that counts.

Geez, that Radeon 9000/8500 is about as misleading as the GeForce4 name on the MX line of cards.

What's up with this, strange practice they are leading?

The Radeon 9000/Pro core is cheaper to produce than the Radeon 8500 core. So, they can sell a product that will perform almost as well, for less money, and make more of a profit. They are a corporation, and are there to make money, don't forget that.

I am sure the prices on G4 will drop once the 9700 comes out. Then you can actully start thinking of which one you want to buy. I think I might shell out the bucks for the 9700, which I think will hold me down with games for at least 2 years because of all the newer features. Plus, i can't wait to run old UT on it.

really.

should be concentrating on UT2003 with that card.
Actually that is one of the few reasons I would get that card, or the next generation Nvidia card.

Hey Fuze, depending on how much a factor cost is, why not consider overclocking a hotshot GeForce 4 4200? Pine just opened up a line of high end hardware called XFX and they gotta 4200 Ti. It's performance at stock values is amazing for a 64MB DDRAM and when o/c'd, then fuhgettubouttit...
Check out this review of it:

Yea, just thinking about running everything maxed out, and still getting 500fps is exciting.

ok, maybe not 500.

Pine? I'll take a Gainward over that any day. Pine is owned by PC Chips if I'm not mistaken.

Forget about Pine, it's junk. I've sadly enough got a Pine TNT2 in this system, just wanted a cheap upgrade from an old , old ATi card, so I went and picked up a cheap card from Future Shop. Glad I did, since I returned in the second day cause the fan was making a LOUD buzzing noise. Well the second card I got was decent, but now the fan is starting to get loud again. I'm just gonna hafta live with it, hoping for a complete upgrade soon.

Speaking of TNT2's, do they even NEED a fan?

Well, I've gone from 1st choice of Ti 4400 to Ti 4200 (128 DDR), to Ti 4200 (64 DDR), due to its overclocking ability to catch up with the Ti 4600's and it's low price. So, the XFX may be overratted, but the Gainward is a killer....
And it looks like Newegg's already dropping GF4 prices with the 9700's release....
