My step Daughter just got a new Emachine 500ix with only
4mbs of video built on of course wich PCI card would give the most bang for the buck (low bucks)for some open GL game play etc. |

This is a comparison that I have never actually seen paired against each other. I'm sure the Voodoo 3 is fast... probably faster than the TNT 2 M64, but it doesn't support 32 bit color. I'm an avid NVidiot, so I'd probably go for the TNT 2. I've had an ASUS TNT card, an Elsa Erazor X and now an Elsa Gladiac (GeForce 2 GTS) and I've been more than happy with all three.

I too use a Viper770 TNT2 and am quite impressed but her
machine won't support it so we have to go PCI and we want the most for the least like everyone else, She's on a tight budget so Dad is willing to help, I was disapointed in the Emachinces built in , I thought 4mb AGP might handle Quake 2 in openGL |

Bang for the buck in a budget system, I'd go Voodoo3. I'm not sold on the Voodoo5's and personally think the Voodoo4's are a joke, but for 100 bucks the Voodoo3 is plenty fast. Plus, in a budget system, who has the speed to run games playable at 32 bit anyways.
Add to the fact that if you happen to be looking at Glide games here, the Voodoo3 running in Glide should be as fast as a much better card in 32 bit color. If you were looking to spend 200 bucks +, I'd say Nvidia without a hitch, but you can't beat Voodoo3's at current prices clock for clock. Xayd |

Voodoo 3 PCI would be the best choice. I don't think the M64 comes in a PCI version or maybe not....

In case you didn't knwo, the TNT2 and the TNT2 M64 are 2 different beasts. The M64 is a rather disappointing "value" version of the TNT2. As the name implies, it uses a 64-bit internal memory bus rather than the TNT2's 128-bit one. This makes the card more affordable, but the performance takes a significant hit as the color depth and resolution increase.
I have nothing against NVidia, I myself have a Geforece 2 MX board, but the M64 is not that great of a card. The Voodoo3 on the other hand is probably a better bet. Even though it doesn't support large textures, 32-bit color, or more than 16 MB of memory, the Voodoo3 line is good at what it does support. Two of my roommates have Voodoo3's and I must say they make a good "low-end" (by current standards anyway) video card. A retail Voodoo3 3000 currently runs under $100. Thats my two cents on the subject. I hope this helps make your choice a little easier. Good Luck! |
